Standing proudly at the southernmost tip of Africa is the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse which has guided mariners safely along our coastline for more than 175 years.

First lit on 1 March 1849, this iconic landmark remains a symbol of South Africa's rich maritime heritage and a beacon for conservation and sustainable tourism.

The Cape Agulhas is also famous as the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Tree planting is part of South Africaโ€™s broader effort to restore the environment and build climate-resilient communities.

Linked to the Presidential tree planting programme, the Department is scaling up action from the previous target of 10 million trees over five years to a renewed ambition of planting 10 million trees in one day on 24 September.

This follows the planting of 1.3 million trees on Heritage Day last year.

The borehole project includes a water system designed to supply multiple water troughs, with an automatic shut-off mechanism that stops the flow once each trough is full and reopens when the water level drops.

This was highlighted today during the 2026 Desertification and Drought Day commemoration in Rietfontein, Northern Cape.

This helps save water, reduce wastage and ensure a reliable supply for the community and livestock.

Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts marked the 2026 Desertification and Drought Day in Dawid Kruiper Municipality, Northern Cape, with the handover of two boreholes to drought-affected communities.

The project will also create opportunities for 84 young people through invasive plant clearing, while helping communities understand land degradation and protect water resources for future generations.

As we observe Desertification and Drought Day 2026, we are reminded that healthy land sustains life, supports livelihoods, strengthens food security and protects biodiversity.

Land degradation and drought threaten communities, ecosystems and economies across the world. By restoring degraded landscapes, practising sustainable land management and conserving our natural resources, we can build resilience for future generations.

This yearโ€™s theme, "Rangelands: Recognise. Respect. Restore.", calls on all of us to value and protect the landscapes that sustain people, wildlife and agriculture.

Together, let's turn commitment into action and restore the land that sustains us all.
