The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa invites you to read our new article examining the significance of the recent Russian attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The article explores why attacks on cultural heritage are about far more than the destruction of buildings. They are attacks on historical memory, identity and the principles established by the international community.

The attack on Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra highlights a deeper objective in the Russia-Ukraine war: to erase memory and reshape historical narratives. This article explores why cultural heritage is a critical battleground in Russia's imperial project.

Russians thought we would surrender to their empire or at least die quietly. We will do neither.

Today, South Africa marks Youth Day, a day that reminds us of the extraordinary courage shown by young people in the struggle against injustice and inequality.

Fifty years after the events of 1976, the determination and hope of South Africa’s youth continue to inspire. Their legacy lives on in every young person who dreams of a better future and works to make a positive difference in their community.

On this special day, we celebrate the energy, creativity and resilience of young people across South Africa, and recognise their important role in building a stronger and more inclusive society.

The Embassy of Ukraine wishes all South Africans a meaningful and inspiring Youth Day.

Happy Youth Day!
