Your professional responsibilities don't disappear when you go online.

AHPCSA's Code and Guidelines contain specific provisions relating to social media use by registered practitioners and therapists.

Practitioners should not use social media in a false or misleading way, and their ethical and legal duty to protect patient confidentiality continues to apply online.

AHPCSA also does not permit interaction with a patient on an open or public social media platform where that interaction concerns the patient's condition or constitutes medical advice and can be accessed by third parties.

Before posting about your services, patients or healthcare topics, consider the accuracy of what you are communicating, patient confidentiality and the professional rules that apply.

Think before you post. Your online conduct is part of your professional conduct.

Accurate patient records are an important part of professional practice.

The AHPCSA Code of Ethics specifically addresses record keeping. Patient records should contain relevant information relating to the patient and their care, including appropriate details of consultations, assessment, healthcare management and treatment.

Records should be appropriately maintained and handled with due regard for patient privacy, confidentiality and applicable professional and legal requirements.

Good record keeping provides an appropriate account of the care provided and is an important part of responsible professional practice.

Keep it accurate. Keep it appropriate. Handle it responsibly.

Patient confidentiality is a professional and legal responsibility.

Information obtained about a patient in the course of providing healthcare must be treated with appropriate confidentiality.

This responsibility extends beyond conversations in the consulting room. Practitioners and therapists should carefully consider how patient information is stored, discussed and shared, including when using email, messaging services, photographs and social media.

There are circumstances in which disclosure may be permitted or required by law, so confidentiality is not an absolute rule without exceptions. However, patient information should never be shared casually or without proper consideration of the applicable professional and legal requirements.

Before you share, send, discuss or post patient information, consider your confidentiality obligations.

Protect your practice by knowing your professional boundaries.

AHPCSA regulates distinct allied health professions, each with an applicable scope of practice. Practitioners and therapists should ensure that the professional services they provide fall within the scope applicable to their registered profession.

The AHPCSA Code also requires practitioners to recognise the limits of their professional knowledge and competence and to maintain their professional knowledge and skills.

Before introducing a new treatment, service or professional activity, make sure that it falls within your applicable scope and that you have the appropriate knowledge and competence to provide it.

Where a patient's needs fall outside your professional scope or competence, appropriate referral may be necessary.

Know your scope. Know your limits. Practise responsibly.

πŸ’‘ DID YOU KNOW?
Your feet are remarkably sensitive structures.

Every step you take generates sensory information that helps your nervous system understand pressure, touch, movement and your body's position in relation to the ground.

The feet contain an extensive network of nerves and sensory receptors that constantly communicate information back to the nervous system.

It's fascinating anatomy, but there's an important distinction: the sensitivity of the feet should not be interpreted as meaning that they can independently diagnose the health of internal organs.

Understanding the difference between human anatomy and healthcare claims helps the public make informed decisions about their care.

Therapeutic Reflexology is a regulated allied health profession in South Africa.

❓ Does a tender spot on your foot mean something is wrong with an organ?
Not necessarily.

Reflexology is commonly associated with maps that relate different reflex areas to parts of the body. But tenderness in a particular area of the foot should not automatically be interpreted as proof that an organ is diseased or that you have a particular medical condition.

Your feet can be tender for many reasons, and a single tender area is not a medical diagnosis.

This is an important distinction when seeking professional care. Registered Therapeutic Reflexologists are required to practise within their professional scope and ethical responsibilities.

πŸ‘£ Reflexology or foot massage? They’re not the same thing.

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but Therapeutic Reflexology has an important distinction in South Africa: it is a regulated allied health profession.

Therapeutic Reflexology involves specific techniques and recognised reflex areas and is practised within a defined professional scope. AHPCSA registration requirements also distinguish Therapeutic Reflexology as a therapeutic profession with specific qualification requirements.

So, when you see β€œreflexology” advertised, it’s worth knowing who is providing the service and whether they are appropriately registered.

Being informed helps you make better choices about your healthcare.

🌿 "Why do Phytotherapists ask about prescription medicines?"
Many people assume that because a medicine is derived from plants, it can simply be used alongside other medicines.

However, some plant-based medicines may interact with prescription medicines or may not be suitable for everyone.

This is one reason why registered Phytotherapists conduct a comprehensive health assessment, including discussion about current medicines, supplements and medical history, before developing an appropriate management plan within their professional scope of practice.

Sharing accurate information about everything you are taking helps support safe, informed healthcare.

πŸ’‘ DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that many medicines used throughout history, and some still used today, are derived from naturally occurring compounds found in plants?

The study of medicinal plants has contributed significantly to the development of healthcare over many years.

Phytotherapy is a regulated allied health profession in South Africa that draws on knowledge of medicinal plants while conducting comprehensive health assessments within the practitioner's professional scope of practice.
