Have you registered to vote yet? 👀

The South African local elections are approaching rapidly, and the big voter registration weekend is upon us.

For the first time ever, the Electoral Commission of South Africa has opened for the opportunity for youth aged 16 and older to register – even though they won’t be able to actually vote until they become eligible at 18 years old.

🗳️Register where you live, and vote where you’re registered.
All you need is to be a South African citizen and to have a valid ID.

We congratulate South Africa on its democratic journey since the first democratic elections in 1994.

🗣️Make your voices heard, Mzansi!

Happy Youth Day, South Africa! 🇿🇦

Today marks 50 years since the Soweto Uprising.

On Youth Day, South Africa commemorates the Soweto Uprising, which took place on 16 June 1976. A tragic occasion where hundreds of brave youths lost their lives, and even more were injured, when protesting against the apartheid’s mandatory use of Afrikaans as teaching medium, under the oppressive Bantu educational system.

The Soweto Uprising was a pivotal event for the anti-apartheid resistance, which demanded a just and equal future for all South Africans alike.

In Denmark, we also have a strong and vibrant youth culture, with young people as the driving force. From youth centres to active participation in political life. We have no doubt that Danish and South African youth can inspire each other 💡

🗣️ Currently, the Embassy is engaged with Sonar Radio, engaging youth in music and talks on issues such of democracy, gender equality and community. Initiatives like these amplify youth voices.

We will continue to support South Africa’s vision for a democracy that empowers youth 🙌

H. E. Ambassador Karin Poulsen has now presented her letters of credence to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House of the Republic of Namibia.

Let’s clean up our act! 🌱

That was the message, when months of collaboration and hard work finally culminated in the reveal of a new colourful wall mural to Pretoria’s CBD.

🤝 The Embassy has in partnership with the City of Tshwane, City of Aarhus and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) sponsored a mural, which serves as a reminder of environmental awareness and actions to keep the urban spaces clean and green.

💬 During the reveal, Ambassador Karin Poulsen remarked that “this mural is not just paint on a wall. It is a conversation between art and science, between university and city, and between Denmark and South Africa.”

To further show the projects commitment to conservation, sustainability, and the restoration of local biodiversity, the partners each helped plant a pepper bark tree in the restored university park 🪏

🎨The mural was brought to life by local artist Jaco Uitenweerde.

celebrate 177 years of Denmark’s Constitution 🇩🇰

Grundlovsdag is a day for celebrating our democracy, and serves as an important reminder of our civic rights and duties to the future generations 🙌

In honour of the occasion, the Danish Embassy hosted a National Day event, in which we had invited our partners – South Africans and Danes alike.

💬 In welcoming our honoured guests, Ambassador Karin Poulsen noted that “Our constitutions may have been written many years ago – but the values and principles are still, and if not more important, in the world we live in today.”

A point, which was also echoed in the speech of John Steenhuisen, the South African Minister of Agriculture, who remarked that “the advancement of human and civil rights encapsulated in our respective constitutions remain the golden thread that binds South Africa and Denmark bilateral relations”

In case, our guests wanted to know exactly what values binds us together – and to practice their Danish language skills - we had a display of mini-constitutions provided by Folketinget.

But that wasn’t the only things on display. The event also showcased items such as LEGO and windmills, which everyone could enjoy while dining on homemade rugbrød.

We were also honoured with a beautiful performance by Tshwane Gospel Choir, who sung both the Danish and the South African national anthems 🎤

Thank you to everyone in attendance – we’ve been very happy to share a little piece of Denmark with you ☀
