AN EVENING OF CELEBRATING MEANINGFUL PARTNERSHIPS 🇩🇰🤝🇿🇦🤝🇪🇺

Last night, the Danish Ambassador Karin Poulsen, together with Team Europe, joined South African and continental partners at a Leadership Dinner at the Summit of the African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town on 15-16 September. The gathering highlighted our shared commitment to deepening collaboration through frameworks like the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy, celebrating the partnerships driving green hydrogen projects forward in South Africa and the continent⚡

The evening set a constructive foundation for the productive discussions ahead, and we are ready to strengthen cooperation with South Africa on this important sector. Thank you to our hosts for their warmth and hospitality 🙌

It’s been a milestone week for the South African-Danish Energy Partnership Programme (SADEPP)! 🇿🇦🤝🇩🇰

Two major events at the Danish Ambassador's residence marked the official commencement of SADEPP’s fourth phase, strengthening our shared commitment to a just energy transition:

✍️ The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) and the Danish Energy Agency signed a new Memorandum of Understanding. This aligns our partnership with future priorities and builds on years of strong cooperation.

⚙️ The programme’s first Steering and Oversight Committee meeting took place, co-chaired by Ambassador Karin Poulsen and Deputy Director-General Dr. Kubeshnie Bhugwandin from the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE). This meeting anchors our work programme at the highest level. It ensures strategic alignment between main partners: DEE, Eskom Holdings, NERSA, and the Independent Power Producer Office.

Through this fourth phase of our Government-to-Government partnership, which began back in 2013, Denmark is proud to continue sharing technical expertise in power market regulation, liberalisation, and renewable energy integration to support our South African colleagues ⚡🌱

🇺🇳 Food is under fire – How do we mitigate global and local food crises? 🇺🇳

This was the central theme and overarching question guiding yesterday’s discussion among present and newly elected non permanent members (E10) of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the Danish Residence.

The engagement followed the recent Danish Signature event, “Food Under Fire,” held on 25 August in New York during Denmark’s presidency of the UN Security Council. The workshop aimed to draw on regional perspectives and realities of food insecurity 🌍

Thanks to Austria 🇦🇹, EU 🇪🇺, Greece 🇬🇷, Pakistan 🇵🇰, Panama 🇵🇦, Portugal 🇵🇹 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 for contributing to a vibrant discussion as well as to Jean-Nicolas Paquet-Rouleau from ICRC and Dhesigen Naidoo from ISS for their insights.

The Danish Embassy 🇩🇰 is proud to co-chair local engagements with the E10 members of the UN Security Council, together with DIRCO. We look forward to continuing to work in this important forum throughout 2026.

A WARM WELCOME TO SOUTH AFRICA'S NEW AMBASSADOR TO DENMARK 🇩🇰🤝🇿🇦

Earlier this August, Ambassador Ntombizodwa Msutukazi Lallie officially presented her credentials to His Majesty King Frederik X at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

This Women's Month we asked: What are the lived experiences of women in South Africa? 🇩🇰🇿🇦

Denmark is deeply committed to gender equality in Denmark and around the world.

We sat down with three brilliant students from the Faculty of Humanities: University of Pretoria to listen and learn.

The students talked about:
The gap between legal rights and everyday reality ⚖️
How young men and women view gender equality today 🤝
The future of women’s rights in South Africa 🔮

Effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property (IP) rights is crucial for safeguarding innovation, supporting legitimate businesses, and protecting consumers from hazardous counterfeit products. This is the core focus of an upcoming South African-Danish cooperation initiative aimed at enhancing IP protection in South Africa 🇩🇰🤝🇿🇦

To combat IP crime successfully, a multi-agency approach is essential. This was highlighted by Michael Poulsen, Head of Department for International Projects at the Danish Patent and Trademark Office, at a recent best-practice seminar in Durban, bringing together 60 participants from the police, customs authorities, and the state prosecution office for an encouraging and lively dialogue. Michael Poulsen emphasised the shared commitment of South Africa and Denmark to keeping consumers safe from products that pose a threat to health and safety.

This vital work will be further expanded in a partnership between the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office.
