NHLS SCIENTISTS PUT WOMEN’S HEALTH UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Johannesburg: As South Africa wraps up Women’s Month, the National Health Laboratory Service
(NHLS) is putting science at the centre of the national conversation on women’s health, bring

ing its
scientists, researchers and scientific expertise to the forefront of some of the most pressing health challenges affecting women in the country.

On Monday, 31 August 2026, NHLS scientists and experts
will lead a public webinar under the theme Women’s Health: "Our Challenges. Our Science. Our Future, taking science beyond the laboratory to unpack the research, diagnostics, evidence and scientific advances shaping women’s health in South Africa."

External stakeholders, including members of the public and the media, are invited to register for and participate in this free webinar using the link provided below. The session will offer direct access to
leading scientists and experts, who will unpack the evidence behind some of the health challenges confronting South African women and highlight the scientific work underway to improve diagnosis,
treatment and health outcomes.

The webinar offers journalists an opportunity to interrogate the science, engage the experts and access credible South African scientific perspectives on women’s health, while exploring the critical role of laboratory medicine, research and diagnostics in building a healthier future for women.

SAHPRA urges patients taking Arya Enalapril 10 mg to stay informed about the recall of four specific batches. Testing indicated that the affected batches may not contain the required amount of the active ingredient, which means the medicine may not work as intended.

Check your batch. Get professional advice if affected. Do not stop your treatment on your own. If you have questions about your medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. Patient safety remains at the heart of SAHPRA's work.

Patient Safety Comes First.

Every enforcement action taken by SAHPRA is about protecting patients and ensuring that health products available to the public meet the required standards for quality, safety and efficacy. Medicines obtained outside the regulated supply chain may be unregistered, falsified, substandard, contaminated, improperly stored or otherwise unsafe for use. Patients may also have no way of knowing where these medicines came from or whether they have been handled and stored correctly.

SAHPRA works with law enforcement and other partners to identify and act against the illegal manufacture, distribution and sale of health products. Protect your health. Always obtain your medicines from authorised and reputable sources. If you encounter suspected illegal or unauthorised medicine sales, report them to SAHPRA. Your information can help prevent potentially unsafe medicines from reaching other patients. Patient safety is everyone’s responsibility.

📢 Expression of Interest: SAHPRA Import Permit Pilot

SAHPRA is introducing a mandatory Import Permit system as part of its strategy to prevent, detect and respond to substandard and falsified medicines and medical devices.

Eligible importers are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to participate in the SAHPRA Import Permit Pilot, scheduled to commence in September 2026.

A joint operation between Hawks and SAHPRA, targeting shops allegedly selling unregulated medicines, resulted in the arrest of nine people on 12 August 2026 in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. Prescription-only medicines were among those found during the operation. Patient safety comes first. Only obtain medicines from reputable shops and licensed pharmacies and use prescription medicines under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
