“𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻”

The 4th Utility-to-utility (U2U) Exchange in Cape Town, supported by JICA, successfully brought together utility professionals from across Africa to explore how Digital Transformation (DX), data analytics, and AI can improve utility performance.

The City of Cape Town kindly hosted and prepared a program for about 16water utility professionals from Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya and Uganda.

During two days of lively discussions, site visits, and peer learning, each utility developed an Action Plan to take home and implement.

The journey continues through ongoing collaboration and online follow-up.

During their stay, the volunteers helped develop experiment manuals and educational videos, organize learning materials, and support the maintenance of science equipment. These resources will continue to be used by the Centre to support hands-on science learning for learners and educators.
JICA sincerely appreciates their dedication and contributions. Together with the ongoing work of the long-term volunteer, we hope these resources will help strengthen science education activities at the Centre.

This volunteer program is implemented in cooperation with Saitama Prefecture, Japan, reflecting our shared commitment to science education in South Africa and international exchange.
This year, JICA dispatched one long-term volunteer (July 2026 to March 2028) and three short-term volunteers (July to August 2026) under the program. Together with the Vuwani Science Resource Centre staff, they supported Science Month activities and engaged learners and educators through a variety of science education initiatives.
While the short-term volunteers have now completed their assignments, the long-term volunteer continues to serve at the Centre, working with staff, educators, and learners to further strengthen science education in the community.
We thank the short-term volunteers for their valuable contributions and look forward to the continued contributions of the long-term volunteer.

Trio deliberates on local health landscape

The Health Partners Forum (HPF) is a group of diverse yet like-minded development partners supporting public health initiatives in South Africa and its neighbouring countries. The HPF meets regularly to share information and to discuss better coordination with not only South Africa’s National Department of Health, but also amongst each other.

On 21 August 2026, Mr MATSUYAMA Takeshi, Chief Representative of the JICA South Africa Office, paid a courtesy visit to the HPF co-chairs; Dr Shenaaz El-Halabi, Country Representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and Ms Stefanie Grewal-Nijssen, Deputy Development Counsellor of the British High Commission.

The trio shared work under their respective mandates, and exchanged views on issues affecting the local, regional and global development agenda.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀

The Respite Care Project, a collaboration between South Africa’s Department of Social Development (DSD) and JICA, has concluded yet another successful activity.

This time, Iris House Children’s Hospice in Cape Town in the Western Cape, served as good practice model. From 21 to 24 July 2026, the Project Team implemented practical training for caregivers, supervisors and centre managers from Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape as pilot provinces. The training, comprehensively covering both theory and practical skills, aimed at enhancing the knowledge, skills and service delivery capacity of caregivers.

Currently, Iris House provides services to around 700 children with disabilities. The organisation places great importance on providing direct activities for children with disabilities as well as supporting the family at large. This perfectly aligns with the services which the Project aims to provide.

During the latter part of the training, the trainees visited the homes of Iris House service users and carried out re-assessment interviews. It was a highly valuable experience to learn the importance of gathering information on a wide range of aspects – from basics such as contact information to the nature of the disability, medication, and the needs of other family members.

The training boosted caregivers’ confidence in providing care to children with disabilities and their families. The Team is looking forward to them continuing to contribute at the project sites by applying the knowledge and skills acquired during this training and sharing them with their colleagues.

She’s got the power!

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗸𝘆𝘂𝘀𝗵𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸.

Ms Sina MAKANA lives in Maseru. She’s one of almost 2,400,000 Basotho inhabiting the Mountain Kingdom. Lesotho is the only independent country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters in elevation. Its citizens, respectful conformists yet mindful global players, stand equally tall.

Ms Makana is exactly whom we had in mind for the training titled “Renewable Energy (C)” under our Young Leaders Programme. In pursuit of a carbon-neutral society, we need people like her to raise the bar on development challenges we simply cannot ignore – climate change and global warming.

Several months have passed since Ms Makana returned from her three-week visit to Kitakyushu. However, as Senior Economic Planner at the Ministry of Energy, she relives her experience almost daily.

The training, targeting officials involved in the promotion of renewable energy, was organised by JICA Kyushu and implemented by the Kitakyushu International Techno-cooperative Association (KITA).

Ms Makana immersed herself in the theory-meets-practice opportunity to learn more about energy policies, renewable energy technologies, and integrated planning. It strengthened her commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient energy development in Lesotho.

“This was a transformative experience. Learning directly from Japanese institutions and industry experts, and visiting renewable energy facilities, provided practical insights that I look forward to adopting in Lesotho. Equally valuable, were opportunities to exchange ideas with fellow participants from around the world. I returned home inspired, equipped with new knowledge and practical skills, and motivated to contribute towards expanding renewable energy and supporting Lesotho’s vision of achieving universal, sustainable, and climate-resilient energy access by 2030.”

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in cooperation with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), hosted its first stakeholder consultation meetings at Tshwane South TVET College on the 22nd of July and at Northlink TVET College on the 28th of July 2026.

Previously, DHET and JICA jointly implemented the Project for Capacity Development of Pilot TVET Colleges, supporting Tshwane South and Northlink TVET Colleges as pilot institutions. Through this project, the sub-training materials and teaching methods for the Fitter and Turner trade, including a set of soft skills training materials covering communication and teamwork, life and career design, and personal finance, as well as workplace practices such as 5S/Kaizen, were successfully developed and uploaded to the National Open Learning System (NOLS). The purpose of the stakeholder consultation meetings was to bring together representatives from TVET colleges, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), industry partners and organizations promoting Kaizen —a Japanese approach to continuous improvement—to discuss improvements to these resources and their wider dissemination to other TVET colleges in South Africa and, where feasible, in neighboring countries.

The inputs and recommendations provided by the stakeholders during the meetings will form the basis for designing activities to revise and more widely disseminate the soft skill materials. This strategic collaboration among DHET, JICA, TVET Colleges and industry partners will support the revision and dissemination of the materials, thereby contributing to enhanced skills training at TVET colleges and improved youth employability in South Africa and beyond.

Testimonies from the representatives of the participating employers indicated that the soft skills training provided through the pilot project had a significant positive impact on apprentices, who are now qualifies artisans, by strengthening their communication, problem-solving, and financial literacy skills.
