STATEMENT BY THE ANCYL TOLOMANE MNYAYIZA REGION ON THE BRUTAL KILLING OF PHILISIWE NDWALANE

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Tolomane Mnyayiza Region expresses its profound anger, grief, and outrage at the brutal killing of a young woman, Philisiwe Ndwalane, a resident of Ward 21.

This savage and barbaric act is yet another painful reminder of the war being waged against women and children in our communities. Gender-Based Violence and Femicide has become a national crisis that continues to rob families of their daughters, mothers, sisters, and future leaders. We refuse to normalise this violence, and we reject the culture of fear that seeks to silence women in society.

As the ANCYL, we reaffirm that the total emancipation and protection of women remains at the centre of the National Democratic Revolution. A society that cannot protect its women and children can never claim to be truly free.

We strongly condemn this heinous crime and call upon law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in ensuring the immediate arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible. There must be no mercy and no bail for perpetrators of such evil acts. Criminals who terrorise communities and prey on women deserve the full might of the law.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Ndwalane family, friends, loved ones, and the broader Ward 21 community during this painful period. Your pain is our pain, and your loss is a loss to the entire community.

Maqabane, this tragic moment demands militant community action and unity. We must intensify community mobilisation, strengthen street committees, revive mass-based activism, and work with all progressive forces to root out violence, criminality, and moral decay within our communities.

The ANCYL further calls upon all structures of the movement, alliance partners, faith-based organisations, community leaders, and civil society formations to unite in confronting this crisis head-on. Our communities must become safe spaces where women and children can live freely, with dignity, without fear of violence, intimidation, or death.

The struggle against Gender-Based Violence is a struggle for the soul of our nation, and it is a struggle we dare not lose.

[Delay post on Saturday]

The African National Congress Youth League Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional Executive Committee (REC), under the capable leadership of Regional Chairperson Cde Zwelethu Jeza and Regional Secretary Cde Sanele Gumede, attended a political engagement program in Ward 23, Bhobhoyi Branch. This important visit formed part of the ongoing programme of strengthening branches, consolidating unity, and ensuring ideological clarity among young cadres on the ground.

The gathering was also attended by the African National Congress Ward 23 Branch Task Team (BTT), led by Convenor Cde Bongani Mthembu, demonstrating the spirit of organisational cooperation and alignment between the mother body and its youth wing. The presence of both structures reaffirmed the commitment to building a cohesive, militant, and disciplined movement rooted in the needs and aspirations of the people.

The political education session was delivered by Regional Fundraiser Cde Zero Mqadi, a seasoned cadre and former Regional Chairperson of the ANCYL, whose contribution added both depth and historical perspective to the engagement. Cde Mqadi took comrades through a detailed political class, reflecting on the rich and militant history of the ANCYL within the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region. He emphasized the sacrifices made by previous generations of youth activists, highlighting the pivotal role the ANCYL has played in advancing the broader mission of the ANC and shaping the political direction of society.

Importantly, Cde Mqadi reminded comrades that the ANCYL is not merely a structure, but a revolutionary school of thought tasked with producing disciplined, conscious, and active young leaders. He stressed that every ANCYL branch serves as a vital engine of the organisation β€” responsible for political education, community mobilisation, and defending the values and principles of the movement at grassroots level. He further called on all members to take ownership of their branches, to remain active in programmes, and to ensure that the ANCYL remains relevant to the everyday struggles of young people.

The session concluded with a renewed sense of unity, purpose, and commitment among comrades, who pledged to strengthen organisational work, deepen political consciousness, and advance the programme of the ANCYL in all corners of the region.

ANCYL TMR Commends Youth Leadership and Stakeholder Collaboration in the Reopening of Umzimkhulu Bridge

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region welcomes the progress made towards the reopening of the Umzimkhulu Bridge, an important economic and transport lifeline connecting communities, businesses, and workers between Port Shepstone, Mtwetweni and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

The ANCYL TMR wishes to commend the decisive leadership demonstrated by REC Member and Chairperson of the Economic Development and Transformation Committee, Cde Shiven Chetty, who has played a leading role in coordinating engagements and interventions aimed at addressing the challenges surrounding the closure of the bridge.

Cde Shiven Chetty did not only participate in the reopening process, but personally led a delegation that brought together a range of key stakeholders committed to protecting the economic stability of the region. The delegation included representatives from the South African Police Service (SAPS), Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement, the Ugu Association of Business & Transport, Ray Nkonyeni Business Association, the Port Shepstone Business Forum, as well as the Mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Her Worship Cllr Zodwa Mzindle.

These engagements demonstrated the importance of collective leadership and partnership between government, business, law enforcement, and community structures in resolving issues that have a direct impact on the livelihoods of our people.

Addressing stakeholders during the engagement, Cde Shiven Chetty emphasized the responsibility of young leaders to actively participate in solving community challenges rather than remaining passive observers.

β€œWe may be young people, but we cannot sit and complain when things do not go according to plan. As young leaders we must form part of the solution, particularly when we have the means and the capacity to contribute to positive change in our communities.”

The ANCYL further notes that Cde Shiven Chetty, together with local business man, Mr Tarell Krishna, has gone above and beyond by personally contributing resources and funds from their own pockets to assist with the ongoing reopening and traffic management of the bridge. Cde Shiven’s commitment reflects the spirit of servant leadership that must characterize young leaders within the movement.

In addition, the ANCYL acknowledges the role played by several private security companies that have stepped forward to support efforts aimed at ensuring safety, stability and coordination during this period.

The closure of the Umzimkhulu Bridge posed a serious threat to the local economy. Businesses in both Port Shepstone and Mtwetweni faced the risk of significant economic losses, disruption of supply chains, and the potential loss of jobs. The ANCYL is particularly concerned about the impact such disruptions would have had on young workers who make up a significant portion of the workforce in retail, transport, and service industries within the area.

As the ANCYL in the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region, we remain clear that economic transformation must not only be about long-term policy discussions, but also about practical interventions that protect livelihoods and sustain local economic activity. The protection of existing jobs is just as important as the creation of new employment opportunities.

The ANCYL TMR therefore continues to work tirelessly to advance programmes and partnerships that will contribute to economic development, job creation, and the empowerment of young people across the region. We will continue to engage municipalities, businesses, and community stakeholders to ensure that infrastructure challenges, economic disruptions, and service delivery issues do not undermine the prospects of young people.

The involvement of young leaders in resolving real challenges on the ground is a clear demonstration that the ANCYL remains a militant and progressive force for economic transformation and community development.

As the youth of the African National Congress, we reaffirm our commitment to being agents of change who do not only raise concerns, but who actively participate in building solutions that improve the lives of our people.

Forward to Economic Freedom in Our Lifetime.
