Yesterday, as we reflected on Youth Day, we were reminded that the future of conservation depends on the young people we inspire today!

A few months ago, The EcoVenturist helped facilitate a school visit to Nyosi Wildlife Reserve, giving learners the opportunity to experience wildlife and conservation firsthand. For some, it was their first time seeing wildlife in the wild🌾

At Nyosi, conservation doesn’t stop at the fence line. As one of South Africa’s first peri-urban reserves, the vision has always been about creating opportunities for both wildlife and communities to thrive together.

Experiences like these help spark curiosity, build connections with nature and inspire the next generation of conservationists 🐾

Hello Aloe!

By the end of June, the aloes begin to bloom, a sudden brightening of the landscape as colour rises above the winter bush. There’s something grounding about this shift in the season, especially here in the Eastern Cape - the wind eases and the days often stay surprisingly warm 🍃.

Aloes store water in their leaves to survive the dry season and provide one of the few nectar sources for birds and insects when little else is in bloom 🐝

Along the way, you begin to learn the isiXhosa names carried through generations here in the Eastern Cape, each one holding meaning, history, and a deeper connection to the animals that move through this landscape.

Every name tells a story rooted in culture, observation, and respect for the natural world. As you begin to understand the language of the land, each sighting becomes more thoughtful, immersive and memorable.

At Nyosi Wildlife Reserve, the land is never just landscape - it is living architecture. On World Environment Day, we are reminded that every valley, thicket and open plain is shaped into home for the creatures that move through it 🌿

For us, it is to honour what the Earth gives, and to move gently within it, through shifting weather, the turning of life cycles 🌱 and the flow of Mother Nature. As part of the world, we are entrusted to protect🌍

From 21 June to 21 July, children between the ages of 4 - 11 years old can enjoy a complimentary 2-hour game drive when visiting Nyosi Wildlife Reserve with an adult. Watch little explorers discover wildlife up close, learn about the animals of the Eastern Cape, and experience the wonder of safari🐾

Today, on Africa Day, we celebrate the people whose knowledge, wisdom and connection to the land continue to shape and protect our future!

One of those people is Blackie Witbooi, a valued member of the Nyosi Reserve and Ground staff team. As one of our senior team members, Blackie carries with him an extraordinary understanding of indigenous plants, their medicinal and cultural uses, and the vital role they play within our landscapes and gardens🌱

Blackie embodies what it means to be African; deeply connected to the land, to community and to the passing on of knowledge. Beyond his work on the reserve, he played an important role in helping establish a non-profit initiative focused on greening and uplifting surrounding communities!

His natural storytelling ability and deep botanical knowledge are not only inspiring, but essential to preserving traditions and wisdom that risk being lost over time. Through his stories, teachings, and daily work, we hope this knowledge will continue to live on through future generations.

Today, we honour Blackie, and all those across Africa who continue to protect, preserve, and share the rich heritage of this continent. 🌍
