Monique works in our control room handling emergency calls and ambulance dispatching. Monique has 9 years experience working in emergency dispatch and joined Gardmed earlier this year. Thank you for being an asset to our team!

Today is World Trauma Day. This day is observed annually to raise awareness on the importance of pre hospital care and to celebrate medics and roleplayers who serve an indispensable role in pre hospital patient care.

Early this morning before 4am a truck left the N2 off a bridge close to Bluewater Bay, landing in the Swartkops River below. Our team, alongside multiple roleplayers, attended the scene and the driver of the vehicle was transported to hospital. This call was a testament to the importance of a coordinated emergency service response to trauma related incidents such as motor vehicle accidents.

Sylvester Phaphiso is a basic life support medic and handles marketing at Gardmed Aliwal North. Sylvester is today’s featured staff member.

Sylvester grew up in Burgersdorp, a small town not far from Aliwal North (now Maletswai) where he attended Burgersdorp High School. Both during school hours and after school, he spent many hours playing rugby with friends

“What led me to become a medic was my desire to help people in difficult and sometimes life-threatening situations. I’ve always been interested in healthcare and wanted a career where I could make a direct difference in someone’s life. The combination of helping others, working under pressure, and constantly learning is what ultimately drew me to becoming a medic.”

Heritage Day 2026 Gqeberha Dayshift Crew.

Today, all around the country, we celebrate Heritage Day. This is a day dedicated to celebrating and appreciating the many diverse cultures we are privileged to have in South Africa.

Thank you to our dayshift crews across all our branches for sacrificing this day to provide emergency care to others.

Over the next few days we will be continuing our tradition of featuring staff members from a wide variety of backgrounds and what led them to become medics.

Successful candidates should meet the following criteria:

1. 2 years medical experience is essential
2. Current registration with the HPCSA as an ECP
3. Drivers License with PrDP
4. Professional, clear and well-spoken with a willingness to learn and teach
5. An ability to work calmly under pressure during periods of high call volumes
6. Be reliable, ethical, have a positive attitude, with contactable references

On May 5, 2026, Gardmed Ambulance Service Port Alfred received a call for a serious motor vehicle accident a few kilometres away from Kenton On Sea.

Our crews mobilised and on arrival found two vehicles had collided. Multiple roleplayers attended the scene and one of the patients involved in this collision was Captain Slabbert. Our team transported Captain Slabbert to hospital and from that point in time onwards he has seen many healthcare professionals on his road to recovery.

Rohan Benn, one of our medics who attended the scene, recently visited Captain Slabbert to see how he was doing and we are pleased to report he is on the mend thanks to all roleplayers and medical personnel involved in his care.

This morning around 5am, our control room received a call for a medical emergency on a ship approximately 8 nautical miles off the coast of Gqeberha. We immediately dispatched an advanced life support ambulance to the harbour. On arrival at the harbour our team met up with NSRI station 6.

Our crew then boarded the NSRI rescue craft and together made their way to the scene. The patient was located, stabilised and then transported back to shore on the rescue craft. Thanks to the amazing teamwork between NSRI, the ship’s crew and our medics, the medevac went smoothly and the patient was conveyed to hospital in a stable condition.

Every year our Kariega team attends the Hoërskool Despatch first aider’s motor vehicle accident simulation. This simulation takes place with multiple roleplayers and we have participated in this program for several years. Hoërskool Despatch has an active first aider program that we are privileged to be involved with. The below photographs were taken at the 2026 display which was held recently.

Nurses Day 2026 saw our medics around the province visiting multiple healthcare facilities, showing their appreciation for the amazing work that nurses do. Nurses have an incredibly important role in the emergency medical service and we salute you!
