Wharf Street

Wharf Street There is little to touch the ambience of the historic Wharf Street. Circa 1826, Wharf Street lays claim to the oldest commercial street in Port Alfred.

It is still a popular historical attraction to both locals and visitors. In the 1800s the river was canalized which enabled the construction of a new wharf on the present Wharf Street. In it's heyday at least a dozen sailing vessels could be counted along the river bank on a single day. With sailing vessels came pirates who offloaded their b***y at the present-day buildings - many of which have tu

nnels under the floors leading into the caves behind the hill. There is little to touch the ambience of this historic street - it oozes with reminders of the tall ships that used to moor here. As you meander down the pavement, you can see the old chains and remnants of the great big wooden poles stuck in the river. One can almost hear the activity that used to take place here. There was a pontoon for crossing the river. Later on, the Putt Bridge was built. The railway yard that was so important to this street is tucked behind the wharf, and in war times, the street teamed with soldiers and travelers on their way to Grahamstown (Makhanda.) Even though some of the current shops stock modern products, the street has kept its old world charm. Each building has been accredited with historical monument status. It is arguably the most undiscovered treasure spot that our region has to offer.

🏁 The Wharf Street Pub & Grill: From Supercars to bikes… and One Legendary Somewhatcar

Back in February, Wharf Street Pub & Grill played host to South Africa’s finest supercars—gleaming machines that turned heads and stopped traffic. Fast forward to last Saturday: the bikes rolled in, revving up the street with pure muscle and chrome. And once again, Doug’s ride took center stage… but this time, with a freshly repaired front bumper and a quiet confidence that said, “I belong here.”

And right in the middle of it all? Doug’s “Somewhatcar.” Slightly bumped, proudly parked, and somehow always center stage. Doug’s humble ride reminded us: you don’t need polish to make an entrance—but a little panel beating doesn’t hurt.

💬 Tag your fellow gearheads and tell us—what’s your dream ride? Or are you Team Doug all the way?

It was so good to see three generations of owners of the Brewery in Wharf Street, Port Alfred this past Saturday at the Four Elements Festival! From left to right, we have the original owner, Ron Wheeldon, with current owners Andre and Adrian Wood in the center, and Ian Cook on the right.

The brewery in Port Alfred kicked off its journey in 1998 as The Coelacanth, and after Ian took the reins, it was renamed The Little Brewery in Wharf Street. Since the Wood brothers took over, they’re in the process of rebranding to Kraft Alchemy. But fear not, beer lovers – all your classic favorites are still here, with some exciting new beers brewing up as well!

Join us in raising a glass to history, community, and of course, great beer! Cheers!
