LIMPOPO DEPARTMENT OF SPORT, ARTS AND CULTURE MOURNS THE LOSS OF CULTURAL ICON, MR. MACKSON MAVUNDA

The Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Mackson Mavunda, a revered figure in the preservation and promotion of Vatsonga cultural heritage. On behalf of the department and the province, MEC Hon. Jerry Maseko extends his heartfelt condolences to the Mavunda family, friends, and the broader cultural fraternity.

Just days ago, on 19 October 2025, Mr. Mavunda was honoured with the prestigious Golden Shield Award as a Living Treasure, in recognition of his 40-year dedication to cultural service. His contributions to traditional dance, music, and mentorship have left an indelible mark on our province and beyond. From the formation of the Mahatlani Dance Group in 1980 to the Caravan Traditional Dance Group in 1990, Mr. Mavunda’s work has been a beacon of Xitsonga pride and resilience.

Through his tireless efforts, Mr. Mavunda ensured that the sounds, movements, and meanings of our traditions would continue to thrive. His legacy will endure for generations to come, and his impact on the cultural landscape of Limpopo and South Africa will never be forgotten.

May the Mavunda family find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the songs, dances, and hearts of those he touched. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: PROVINCIAL LIMPOPO ARTS AND CULTURE AWARDS(LACA) 2025

The Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is pleased to announce the official call for nominations for the Limpopo Arts and Culture Awards (LACA) 2025. These awards will celebrate excellence, innovation and commitment by individuals, groups and institutions who promote and preserve our province’s diverse arts, culture and heritage.

Members of the public, cultural practitioners, cultural organisations and institutions are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates across the prescribed award categories which are-

• The Heritage Site Category (x3 Awards)
• The Visual Arts & Craft Category (x4 Awards)
• The Literary Works Category (x4 Awards)
• The Audio Visual & Interactive Media Category (x6 Awards)
• Design & Creative Services (x4 Awards)
• The Performing Arts Category (x6 Awards)
