COSAS Capricorn Region RCPTT

For immediate release

22 May 2024

The RCPTT of COSAS Capricorn Region, is deeply saddened by the recent incident involving a 9-year-old child who was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between members and supporters of the EFF and ANC. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous consequences of political violence and the impact it can have on innocent lives.

It is unacceptable that a learner, who should be playing and enjoying their childhood, has become a victim of the senseless violence that has plagued our society. The fact that this incident occurred during a political altercation only serves to highlight the toxic nature of the current political climate in our country.

As COSAS Capricorn Region, we are committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of all learners, and we condemn any form of violence that puts their lives at risk. It is imperative that political parties and their supporters engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue, rather than resorting to violence and intimidation.

We call on the leaders of both the EFF and ANC to take responsibility for the actions of their members and supporters, and to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The safety and security of our communities, especially learner in particular, should be a top priority for all political parties.

we urge all political parties and their supporters to conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful, peaceful, and in the best interests of the people they claim to represent. The tragic incident involving the 9-year-old learner should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to work towards a society where violence has no place, and where the well-being of the learners are protected at all costs. Let us come together to build a better future for all, free from the fear of violence and harm.

We also wish a speedy recovery to the learner.
