A new approach by government to promote active and healthy lifestyles, called Move for Health, was launched in Dundee under Umzinyathi District today. The Move for Health Day is an active recreation and healthy lifestyle initiative, a pillar of I Choose 2B Active campaign, which encourages South Africans to step up and take charge of their health and wellness 365 days a year. The campaign further dares others to join so that they can also change behaviour by embodying physical and active lifestyle regularly.
Another objective of Move for Health Day is to entice citizens into the habit of undertaking vigorous physical activity of any form so that on daily basis, irrespective of where they are, they undertake outdoor activities of any form therefore sparking an improvement in their health.
This active lifestyle programme is an international event created back in 2004 by the World Health Organization promoting physical activity with the objective of improving and maintaining good health through encouraging world citizens to at least on daily basis set aside 30 minutes of their busy schedules and engage in physical activity.
This yearβs event (Move for Health Day) which was at Sibongile township encompassed a 5Km - Fun Walk
Aerobics,
Tai Chi, yoga
and indigenous games.
All partipants who came out in their handreds from all local municipalities under Umzinyathi District were given a start-up exercise kit including a skipping rope, aerobics mat and a golf shirt and a matching head cap.
The main message is that one does not need to pay for gym membership to remain physically active. A walk up the stairs, cycling around the neighborhood and a walk to the shops can make a huge difference.
