There are a several groups of quiet unsung conservation heroes of our natural areas, not only in and around Pietermaritzburg, but situated all over KZN. Mark Lederle is an Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Honorary Officer with the Thurlow Group and together with fellow HO’s play a significant role in combatting poaching in all its forms as well as playing a valuable role in other areas of conservation management. Do join Mark for this talk and help raise awareness for the ongoing and escalating plight of our natural areas in and around Pietermaritzburg.

Spend a day in nature with the whole family at the Ashburton Aloe Festival with five venues open as a meander over the weekend of the 5th & 6th July. Experience the peace and tranquility of this beautiful bushveld area, enjoy being amidst its wilderness landscapes and wildlife for a program of conservation and environmental talks, guided and self-guided walks and activities in the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy, in Ashburton East, just 10km east of Pietermaritzburg.

Cost is R50 per person, R30 for pensioners and R20 for children, under 6 are free. (Cash for ticket sales and venue stalls please as signal for electronic devices is limited) Strictly no dogs allowed. All funds raised go to support the anti-poaching activities of the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy and Mpushini Protected Environment.

Do join us for "Mayine The Rain Queen", a captivating theatrical performance promoting water preservation through the traditional African oral storytelling method. Join us to welcome Makhubalo the Storyteller to the Ashburton Aloe Festival to perform it for us this year!

The message of the story is that “every drop counts”. The show has been staged at prominent schools and conferences all over South Africa.

KHUBA STORIES is a dynamic creative platform founded by Makhubalo Ikaneng, with over two decades of experience in educational and socially conscious storytelling. The company was established to package and share Makhubalo’s extensive body of work with clients in both the public and private sectors, in South Africa and globally. At its core, KHUBA STORIES harnesses the power of African storytelling, theatre, and multimedia to spark dialogue, raise awareness, and inspire change. Makhubalo’s work reaches individuals, families, and entire communities—amplifying voices and tackling critical issues such as water preservation, social justice, and youth empowerment.

Bring your campchairs or blankets (limited chairs are available) and afternoon picnic or support the Conservancy Tea Garden for refreshments.

To make this production possible we are charging an additional ticket of R50 (all ages).
