The Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Hon. N.N Boyce, wishes to inform members of the media of the outcome of a matter heard in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on 19 June 2026 concerning the National Freedom Party (NFP) and Hon. C.M Shinga.

The Court granted an order interdicting the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from giving effect to a communication from the NFP which sought to remove Hon. Shinga as a member of the Legislature. The Court further prohibited the Legislature from taking any action that would result in her removal and suspended the decision giving rise to the dispute.

In addition, the Court directed that, should any steps have already been taken to implement the removal, the Legislature must restore the status quo ante and reverse any such action.

In compliance with the Court order, the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature confirms that the status quo ante has been restored, and Hon. C.M Shinga remains a member of the Legislature. The institution will continue to conduct itself in accordance with the Court’s directive.

The Speaker reiterates the Legislature’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and
respecting judicial processes.

Today, under theme: "Reset@50 THE FUTURE CALLS" the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature convened its Annual Youth Parliament at the Nkanini Sports Centre in Ugu District as part of the commemoration of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, honouring the courage, resilience and selfless sacrifices of young South Africans who stood at the forefront of the struggle against apartheid. The gathering provided a platform for young people from across the province to engage on matters affecting their future, while reflecting on the enduring legacy of the 1976 generation whose unwavering commitment to freedom and justice helped shape South Africa's democratic dispensation.

As the province commemorates Youth Month, attention has increasingly turned to the pressing socio-economic challenges confronting today's youth. High levels of unemployment, the scourge of substance and drug abuse, poverty, crime and limited access to economic opportunities continue to undermine the aspirations of many young people. These challenges threaten to erode the gains of democracy and highlight the urgent need for collaborative interventions from government, the private sector and civil society to create an enabling environment that empowers young people to realise their full potential.

The Youth Parliament further underscored the importance of equipping young people with relevant knowledge, competencies and future-focused skills that align with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As technology continues to transform industries and redefine the world of work, young people were encouraged to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global economy. Delegates emphasised that investing in education, skills development and youth empowerment remains critical to unlocking sustainable economic growth and ensuring that the legacy of the 1976 youth continues to inspire generations to come.

Following extensive deliberations on critical issues affecting the daily lives of young people, the Youth Parliament adopted a series of resolutions aimed at addressing their socio-economic challenges and developmental needs. These resolutions will be formally submitted to government for consideration and implementation, with each recommendation being referred to the relevant government department for appropriate action and follow-through.
