uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) is pleased to report a significant improvement in the removal of 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB), the compound responsible for the earthy and musty taste and odour that has affected portions of the water supplied to the eThekwini Metro in recent months.
Through our interventions, we have managed to remove over 70% of 2MIB from the water.

The elevated 2-MIB levels originated from algal activity in Inanda Dam and impacted the quality of raw water supplied to the Wiggins Water Treatment Works for treatment and distribution. While algal counts in the dam remain above acceptable levels, the extensive optimisation of treatment processes initiated in May 2026 is now delivering measurable results.

Recent water quality analyses indicate that 2-MIB concentrations in treated water have consistently reduced to levels at, or below, the human odour detection threshold. This represents a major milestone in UUWโ€™s efforts to address the taste and odour challenges experienced by consumers.

The improvement has been achieved through the implementation and optimisation of advanced treatment processes at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works, supported by intensified monitoring and operational interventions. These measures have significantly enhanced the plantโ€™s ability to manage fluctuating source water quality conditions associated with algal blooms in Inanda Dam.

UUW recognises the inconvenience caused to consumers during this period and appreciates the patience and understanding shown by affected communities while these interventions were being implemented.

Although the current results are encouraging, UUW will maintain its enhanced treatment regime and continue to closely monitor water quality conditions within the dam and throughout the treatment process. In parallel, the organisation is pursuing catchment management interventions aimed at addressing the underlying causes of excessive algal growth and reducing the likelihood of future taste and odour events.

UUW remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality drinking water to all customers and will continue to invest in both operational and long-term solutions to safeguard water quality across its supply system.

Are young people being given a real seat at the table in water governance? That conversation starts on 10 June.

We're proud to announce the inaugural session of the WASH Connect Youth Leadership Dialogue โ€” a platform designed to move beyond the narrative of youth as the "future" of the sector, and instead recognise them as active leaders shaping decisions right now.

This session tackles the areas that matter most to young water professionals:
Youth Leadership in Water Governance and Breaking into the WASH Sector.

The combined storage of Albert falls/Nagle System, supplying the Greater eThekwini Municipality via Durban Heights and Maphephethwa Water Treatment Works, is currently at 95% of its full supply capacity.

DID YOU KNOW?

Recent water quality monitoring within the Albert Falls-Nagle-Durban Heights System has shown a welcome decline in algal counts, providing some relief after ongoing algal bloom challenges experienced since 2024. However, taste-and-odour compounds such as 2-MIB and geosmin remain present in parts of the system, highlighting the importance of continued water quality monitoring and catchment protection. Save water, weather the drought.

Celebrating World Environment Day 2026!

The 5th of June was an incredible day at the Howick Falls Precinct as we gathered with stakeholder together for World Environment Day under the theme "Our Planet, Our Responsibility"!

From engaging stakeholder sessions to inspiring entertainment, we celebrated our commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. A huge thank you to all the organizations and schools that participated, including UMDM Disaster Management, eWaste Africa, and the talented students from Corrie Lynn Primary, uMthombo Secondary, Sifisesihle Primary, and Asibemunye Secondary!

Together, we made pledges to protect our environment and learned how we can all contribute to a healthier planet.

Letโ€™s keep the momentum going! Share your favorite moments from the event and let us know how you plan to make a difference!

A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate and biodiversity crises.
Nature also demonstrates that even the toughest challenges yield to collective wisdom and resolve. Like the roots that anchor a mighty forest, our strength lies in unity. A global plastic pollution treaty is our opportunity to create a meaningful instrumentโ€”one that addresses the full lifecycle of plastics and delivers a tangible impact in ending plastic pollution.
We need to protect and preserve our oceans by:
โ€ข Preventing plastic and other solid waste from entering water sources that lead to our oceans.
โ€ข Managing plastic and other solid waste by recycling and upcycling plastic and other material. Upcycled products may be a means of income generation, thus encouraging a circular economy.
โ€ข Practicing sustainable fishing.
โ€ข Leaving only your footprints following traditional rituals. Clean up all items brought to the beach.

Today, uMngeni-uThukela Water proudly hosted two schools: Slangspruit and Ndabenhle Primary Schools for a World Environment Day awareness session, joined by key stakeholders including Msunduzi Municipality, DUCT, SAPS, the library, and the Ward 13 and 19 Cllrโ€™s and Ward Committee members.

The engaging programme focused on water resource protection, the impacts of water pollution on water quality and quantity, and the importance of responsible waste management. Learners also enjoyed seeing fresh vegetables grown on the rehabilitated dumping site near the river, a powerful example of restoration and environmental care.

The KwaZulu-Natal Province has received relatively below-average rainfall during the summer season. As a result, dam levels in most parts of the province are currently lower than compared to this time last year. Furthermore, an assessment of ENSO indicators shows a high probability of the development of an El Niรฑo cycle, which has been termed as a super El Niรฑo by various media publications.
