The Salvation Army in KwaZulu Natal (Mathunjwa Army) The Salvation Army is an evangelical Christian church known for charitable work. Social services began in 1886.

It is an international movement that currently works in over a hundred countries On 4 March 1883 Major and Mrs Francis Simmonds with Lieutenant Alice Teager ‘opened fire’ in Cape Town. Other officers were sent to the island of St Helena in 1886 to consolidate work commenced (in 1884) by Salvationist ‘Bluejackets’. The Army’s first organised ministry among the African people was established in 1888

in Natal and, in 1891, in Zululand. Evangelistic effort in Mozambique, pioneered in 1916 by African converts, was officially recognised in 1923.

Its been 120 years since The Salvation Army invaded KwaZulu Natal, the very first native converts being Mbambo Mathunjwa and Moses Maphumulo to name a few. This year we are celebrating and promoting the Army and all the work that has been done since 1891. All Salvationists and Friends of the Army please join us as we celebrate the heritage of the Army in KwaZulu Natal
