ALLEVIATING ASSET POVERTY - SECURING A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

*The KZN footprint of the national "Title Deeds Friday" programme was extended to UGu District on 11 September 2026.

The Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Tandi Mahambehlala, and KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma led the handover of 630 title deeds to beneficiaries of the Masinenge and Louisiana Housing Projects at Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, under UGu District Municipality.

The handover forms part of the Department of Human Settlements' ongoing efforts to accelerate registration and issuing of title deeds to the beneficiaries of fully subsidized housing programme.

As part of the campaign, residents are receiving legal ownership of their homes, securing their future and creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.

A title deed ensures security of tenure unlocks household asset value and confirms legal ownership of a home, thus bringing peace of mind to families and future generations.

The Deputy Minister and MEC were accompanied by the UGu District Mayor, Cllr Sikhumbuzo Mqadi and Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Zodwa Mzindle as they also embarked on a house-to-house handover of title deeds to senior citizens.

The atmosphere at the UGu Sports & Leisure Centre was filled with smiles, singing, dancing, and ululation as families celebrated the dignity, security, and peace of mind that come with homeownership.

A home is more than a roof over one's head, it is a place of dignity, comfort and independence.

Today, the Department of Human Settlements handed over a new, accessible home to Mr. Lungisani Chiliza of Ward 8, uMgayi, in the Mzumbe Local Municipality. Confined to a wheelchair due to illness, Mr. Chiliza had been living in conditions that were not suitable for his mobility needs. Through swift intervention, the Department provided a spacious 45m² home that enables him to move freely and safely, restoring dignity and improving his quality of life.
