PREMIER NTULI URGES ERADICATION OF SILOS IN SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, presided over the KZN Economic Council meeting at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre, on Friday 11 September 2026.

The council meeting was attended by Members of the Executive Council, union representatives, academics and the captains of industry.

Among other things, the council meeting deliberated on ways to grow the economy in an effort to create jobs, and improve lives and livelihoods.

Commentators at the meeting observed that ongoing tensions between USA and Iran are negatively affecting the price of fuel which in turn has an impact on the food hikes and transport costs for ordinary members of the community.

In his opening address, Premier Ntuli reminded the council members of the economic effects of the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, in New York, on 11 September 2001 − twenty five years ago.

To this day, added the Premier, geopolitics still have an impact on the economy and on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, whose dreams are deferred by economic hardships imposed by global tensions.

The Premier concluded his remarks by urging academics to produce empirical research which will help government to address unemployment, allay fears and restore hope where such has been lost.

He also pointed out that the war on unemployment can be won through the eradication of silos, through collaboration between government and the private sector.
