HON. CYNTHIA MBALI SHINGA REMAINS COMMITTED TO SERVING THE PEOPLE OF KWAZULU-NATAL AS LEGAL PROCESSES CONTINUE

The National Freedom Party (NFP) in KwaZulu-Natal notes the court proceedings held today concerning the matter involving the NFP Provincial Chairperson, MPL and MEC for Social Development, Hon. Cynthia Mbali Shinga.

Hon. Shinga approached the court seeking legal relief following recent developments relating to her purported expulsion from the National Freedom Party and the implications thereof on her role as a public representative.

While the court found that the matter did not meet the requirements to be enrolled and heard on an urgent basis, it is important to clarify that the substantive issues raised were not dismissed or determined. The matter will therefore proceed through the appropriate legal processes where the merits and issues raised will be properly ventilated.

Importantly, an undertaking was placed on record on behalf of the Honourable Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature that no replacement member will be sworn into the Legislature pending the finalisation of the relevant legal and internal party processes.

This provides the necessary space for due process, fairness and the rule of law to unfold without prejudicing the representation of the organisation and the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

The NFP maintains that internal democracy, constitutional processes and fairness remain fundamental principles that must guide all organisations. Political disagreements must always be resolved through lawful and transparent mechanisms that protect both the institution and the people represented.

Hon. Cynthia Mbali Shinga remains a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and continues with her responsibilities as the MEC for Social Development, serving communities across the province and ensuring that the important work of government continues without interruption.

The NFP in KwaZulu-Natal remains focused on service delivery, strengthening communities and upholding the mandate entrusted by the people.

The NFP Women’s Movement was proud to participate in the launch of the 70th Anniversary of the historic 1956 Women’s March, a defining moment in South Africa’s struggle for freedom, justice and equality.

This important commemoration not only honours the courage and sacrifice of the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, but also celebrates the generations of women leaders who have continued to shape our democracy and advance the cause of women’s empowerment.

For the National Freedom Party, this occasion carries profound significance. Our organisation was founded by Hon. Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, a trailblazing leader whose vision, courage and commitment to serving ordinary South Africans broke barriers and inspired countless women across the country. kaMagwaza-Msibi made history by founding and leading the first political party in democratic South Africa established by an African woman that went on to achieve representation across all spheres of government. Her legacy remains a powerful reminder that women can lead, build institutions and transform society.

As we reflect on the journey of women in South Africa, we also acknowledge the contributions of distinguished leaders who participated in today’s proceedings such as Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, mam Baleka Mbete, former First Lady Zanele Mbeki and former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka among others, whose leadership and advocacy have strengthened the role of women in governance, development and nation-building. Their achievements stand as a testament to the resilience, determination and excellence of South African women.

However, at the centre of this commemoration for the NFP stands Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, whose life and work embodied the spirit of the women of 1956. She championed the rights of women, fought for the upliftment of rural communities, and demonstrated that women can occupy positions of leadership while remaining deeply connected to the needs of the people they serve. Her legacy continues to inspire the NFP Women’s Movement to build a society where women are empowered politically, economically and socially.

As we honour the women of 1956 and the generations that followed, we recommit ourselves to advancing the rights of women, promoting gender equality, supporting women in leadership, combating gender-based violence, creating economic opportunities for women and ensuring that the challenges facing women today remain at the forefront of public policy and national development.

The struggle for women’s emancipation is far from over, but by drawing inspiration from pioneers such as Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi and other remarkable women leaders, we remain confident that a more equal and inclusive South Africa is possible.

The presence of women leaders from across government and society at the launch of the 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March reminds us that representation matters.

The NFP Women’s Movement believes that women must not only be represented in leadership positions, but must be empowered to influence policy, drive development and shape the future of our communities.

While significant progress has been made, many women continue to face poverty, unemployment, violence and unequal access to opportunities. Our task is to ensure that the next generation of women inherit a more equal South Africa.

The NFP Women’s Movement was honoured to be part of the national commemoration celebrating the fearless women of 1956.

We welcome the call by Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga for continued action towards gender equality, women empowerment and the eradication of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

As the first political party in democratic South Africa founded and led by an African woman, Hon. Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, the NFP understands that the struggle for women’s empowerment must continue beyond commemorative events and translate into real opportunities, safety, dignity and economic inclusion for women across our country.
