☆Weather and the recent floods☆

I had to go back in my records to remind myself of recent weather events and rainfall figures. In 2020 and 2021 we had notable amounts of rainfall in January and February. In 2011,2012 and 2013 we had significant floods in January 2011 and in March of the other years. Scenes of people being airlifted through the rooves at Shingwedzi camp I think will be etched in many people’s memories.

My father-in-law reminded me of helicopters in 2020 being used to monitor the roads around Letaba camp and make sure everyone was safe.
2023 has again come up trumps with significant rainfall. We have all been praying for some significant rain in recent weeks as the veld was looking in a very poor state. Sometimes they say you shouldn’t pray too hard as you may get more than you bargained for. 100mm in 24 hours probably fits that description pretty well.

The rains in this past week will certainly have helped the grass recover and the trees will benefit but our roads have taken a hammering. Thankfully the ranger team had already done some work just before which I am sure will have reduced the impact somewhat. The Olifants river has been at the highest levels for a few years although not quite reaching those remarkable scenes a decade ago.

As far as I am aware there has been no significant structural damage to homes on the reserve which we must be thankful for. I am sure there are a few that had leaking rooves like we did, and Umgede hide was under about 25cm water inside which was fun!
Crossing flowing rivers is always a risk and should always be done with caution and only if absolutely necessary. Thankfully today’s incident at the Swartspruit was resolved with no injuries or major damage to person or machine.
Take care on the roads out there everyone, stay safe and try to stay dry.
