THUNTSHA LEROLE PHASE 6 ACCELERATED SERVICE DELIVERY PROGRAMME IN LEEUDORINGSTAD

Today, 22 May 2026, the Thuntsha Lerole Phase 6 Accelerated Service Delivery Programme was held in Leeudoringstad, to engage on service delivery matters and community development initiatives.

SOCIAL CLUSTER
The first presentation under the Social Cluster programme was delivered by the District Single Whip, Cllr Jeffrey Lesie, who provided feedback on the side visits conducted during the programme. The visits included various stakeholders such as the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), the Department of Social Development, and the Office of the Single Whip.
As part of the outreach initiatives, shoes were donated to learners at Bohea Primary School, while school bags were handed over to learners at Thusang Primary School. Cllr Lesie acknowledged that although the donations brought relief to many learners, additional vulnerable children in need were identified during the visits. He further indicated that efforts would be explored to ensure that those who could not benefit during the current intervention are assisted in future.
The delegation also visited Boskuil Combined School, where awareness programmes on child protection were conducted to educate and empower learners and community members on issues affecting children’s safety and wellbeing.

On matters relating to food security, seeds and gardening tools were donated to five families within the community. Beneficiaries also received training on sustainable gardening practices aimed at encouraging self sufficiency and household food production.

INFRASTRUCTURE CLUSTER
During the Infrastructure presentation, MMC for Infrastructure MMC Mphafudi addressed the community on previously raised service delivery grievances and provided progress feedback on interventions undertaken. He reported that high mast lights had been installed, street lights repaired, and critical roads in Extension 6 had been cleared and rehabilitated.

IEC
Ms. Mantshadi Mohadi from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) also delivered a presentation during the engagement.

FEEDBACK SESSION Q's AND A"s
Community members also used the platform to raise several pressing concerns affecting their daily lives. One of the major issues highlighted was the location of the dumping site, which residents indicated is situated too close to the residential area. Community members requested the closure of the site, citing health and environmental concerns. It was further noted that although DEDECT had reportedly declared the dumping site closed, residents continue to utilise the area due to the absence of an alternative refuse disposal site.
The community also expressed frustration regarding the Solar System Project, which they stated has remained unresolved for over five years. Residents indicated that the project has the potential to contribute significantly towards local job creation and economic development.
Concerns were further raised regarding borehole water infrastructure, with residents stating that water pipes are not effectively supplying water to the community. The community appealed to the Municipality to urgently intervene and ensure that the matter is resolved.
In addition, residents from Izalo requested the District Municipality to provide mobile toilets, highlighting the difficulties they experience in accessing adequate municipal sanitation services.

NCOP Taking Parliament to the People Programme Continues with Public Hearings on Mining, Electricity and Energy

Today Wednesday, 13 May 2026 National Council of Provinces (NCOP) continued with Day 2 of its four day "Taking Parliament to the People" community engagement programme , focusing on critical issues affecting communities within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, particularly Mining, Electricity and Energy.

Community members from across the district attended the public hearings in numbers to voice their concerns and engage directly with government leaders and stakeholders on service delivery challenges affecting their daily lives.
Among the major concerns raised by residents were the ongoing theft of electrical cables, escalating electricity costs, and persistent power-related challenges experienced within local communities. Residents expressed frustration over the impact these issues have on households, businesses, and overall community development.

The hearings also provided a platform for critical discussions on mining related matters. Community members highlighted concerns regarding the role of mining companies in local development, with many expressing the view that mining operations are not doing enough to uplift surrounding communities through meaningful economic opportunities, infrastructure development, and social investment initiatives.
However, unemployment emerged as the dominant issue throughout the engagement, with residents describing it as the root cause of growing poverty, crime, and social challenges affecting communities across the district.

The NCOP’s Taking Parliament to the People programme aims to strengthen democracy by creating a direct platform for communities to engage with government institutions, raise service delivery concerns, and contribute towards finding sustainable solutions to socio-economic challenges.
