MAYOR MTHETHWA INTERVENES TO SAFEGUARD ONE-WEEK-OLD BABY FOUND AT uMTUBATUBA BUS RANK

The Mayor of Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality, Cllr. M. Mthethwa, has intervened to ensure the safety and wellbeing of a one-week-old baby girl who was found at a shelter in the uMtubatuba Town area.

The matter came to the Mayor’s attention after he received information about the newborn being cared for by a woman living on the streets. The Mayor immediately instructed municipal officials to locate the woman and the baby so that appropriate assistance could be provided.

Municipal workers subsequently traced the baby to a shelter, where a man was found caring for the child. The Mayor, accompanied by members of the municipal police and social workers, immediately went to the shelter to assess the situation and ensure that the baby was safe.

Upon their arrival, the child’s mother had returned to the shelter but subsequently left again, leaving the baby behind.

The Municipality has since involved social workers to assess the circumstances surrounding the child and ensure that appropriate child-protection and welfare measures are followed.

“This is no environment in which a newborn baby should be raised. We are thankful that our municipal workers were able to track down the child and ensure that she was found and brought to the attention of the relevant authorities,” said Mayor Mthethwa.

“We are hopeful that our social workers will be able to assist in ensuring that this little girl is safe, healthy and receives the care she needs. We also appeal to the family of the mother to come forward and engage with us at the municipal offices. We will connect them with our social workers so that the necessary assistance can be provided,” the Mayor added.

The Municipality continues to work with the relevant professionals to ensure that the best interests of the child remain the priority.

Amukela uNgqongqoshe enkulumweni yakhe uMeya Mthethwa ukhuthaze ukwakhiwa kwemindeni phezu kwesisekelo somshado.

INKOSI UMTUBATUBA MUNICIPALITY MAYOR CONDEMNS FATAL SHOOTING AT MTUBATUBA TOWN BUS RANK

Inkosi uMtubatuba Municipality has expressed shock and deep concern following the fatal shooting of a woman at the Mtubatuba Town Bus Rank earlier today.

The woman was reportedly shot multiple times in the head in broad daylight, in an incident that has left members of the community shocked and concerned about safety in the town centre.

It has been alleged that the deceased may have been involved in the sale of illegal drugs. However, the Municipality stresses that these allegations have not been verified and that it is the responsibility of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other relevant law-enforcement authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Inkosi uMtubatuba Mayor, Cllr. M. Mthethwa, has strongly condemned the killing and called for urgent action to address criminal activity in the municipality.

“I am deeply shocked and disturbed by this brutal killing, particularly because it happened in broad daylight at a busy public facility in the heart of Mtubatuba. No community should have to witness such violence, and no person should lose their life in this manner.

“If there are allegations of drug dealing or any other criminal activity, these matters must be properly investigated by the relevant authorities. We cannot allow allegations to become a substitute for proper law enforcement. We call on SAPS and all relevant authorities to work closely with the Municipality in establishing the facts and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The safety of our residents, visitors, traders and everyone who uses our public facilities must remain a priority. We will not remain silent in the face of violent crime. We urge law-enforcement authorities to act decisively and we appeal to members of the community to cooperate with the investigation and provide any information that may assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice," said Mayor Mthethwa.

The Municipality extends its condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

Inkosi uMtubatuba Municipality will continue to engage with law-enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders regarding safety and security within the municipal area.
