Regraveling Project on track

The regraveling of the road between Clanwilliam and Calvinia was successfully completed with only minor finishing and flood damage repair work scheduled for completion by the end of July.

The project involved widening the road from 6 metres to 7.5 metres, importing and placing new gravel wearing course material, improving drainage through the installation of new culverts and extensions to existing culverts, and finishing the road surface to improve rideability, durability, and safety.

The work was carried out by the Construction and Concrete team from the northern region of the district, on behalf of the Western Cape Government, demonstrating the exceptional value and expertise that exists within the public sector.

This upgrade forms part of the West Coast District Municipality's ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable road network for all road users.

Quality Maintenance Proves Its Worth

Following the light rainfall experienced across parts of the district early this morning, municipal officials were out on the ground assessing gravel roads in the Rust Stasie and Koringberg areas to evaluate how recently completed maintenance work is performing under wet weather conditions.

While some sections were naturally wet and muddy, the maintenance work carried out proved to be of an exceptionally high standard. Road surfaces remained stable, while drainage channels that were cleaned and maintained effectively directed water away from the roadway and into culverts, helping to protect the road infrastructure and minimise erosion.

A word of appreciation goes to our roads teams for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to quality service delivery.

⚠️ Motorists are reminded to exercise caution when travelling on gravel roads during and after rainfall.

🚗 Travel safely and enjoy your weekend.

"It's Not Business as Usual"

These words echoed through the halls of Malmesbury Campus at West Coast College during the Entrepreneurship Competition, where aspiring entrepreneurs showcased innovative ideas and solutions.

Addressing the participants, Heinrich Robertson from West Coast District Municipality challenged students to think differently:

"It's Not Business as Usual" is not a quote – it's a challenge. Yesterday's solutions will not necessarily solve today's problems. You saw an opportunity, identified a gap and developed an entrepreneurial idea to make a difference."

Robertson highlighted the need for innovative partnerships between municipalities, businesses and entrepreneurs to tackle challenges such as service delivery, climate change and economic growth.

Sponsored by Allan Gray, the competition provides a platform for young innovators to turn ideas into opportunities and prove that the future belongs to those willing to challenge the status quo.

We thank West Coast College Institution of Excellence for inviting us to be part of this exciting programme.

Go Bafana Bafana!!!

As take to the world stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026, they carry with them more than the hopes of eleven players on a football field. They carry the dreams, pride and spirit of an entire nation.

Sport has a unique power to bring people together.

Tonight, when Bafana Bafana face Mexico, our differences fade, our challenges are set aside, and South Africans from every community, culture and background stand united behind one flag. It reminds us that we are stronger together.

As they represent South Africa on the global stage, they are also showcasing the determination, talent and character of our nation to the world. Every pass, every tackle and every goal will be watched with pride by millions of South Africans who believe in them.

To the players, coaches and support staff: thank you for carrying our hopes and our flag with honour. Play with passion, courage and confidence. Know that an entire nation stands behind you.

Go make South Africa proud. Ke Nako. The time is now.

Weskus Tourism Stakeholders Unite for Inclusive Growth

The region hosted the Regional Tourism forum in Saldanha Bay and Bergrivier region. Tourism leaders, government representatives and industry stakeholders gathered in the West Coast to explore how tourism can unlock opportunities for local communities and drive economic inclusion across the region.

Welcoming delegates, West Coast District Municipality Deputy Mayor Alderman Sandra Crafford highlighted tourism's vital role in creating jobs, supporting small businesses and stimulating local economic development throughout the West Coast.

Tourism Officer Jacqulene Melenephy reinforced the strong link between tourism, destination marketing, economic growth and investment attraction. She emphasised the District Municipality’s coordinating role in creating a unified tourism approach, ensuring that tourism initiatives, visitor experiences and marketing efforts are aligned across municipal boundaries to strengthen the West Coast’s competitiveness as a destination.

Delegates also experienced the region's tourism offerings first-hand through visits to the Middelpos Township Experience, local fishing harbour, Oppikaai Seafood Restaurant and West Coast Distillers — showcasing how community-driven tourism can create meaningful opportunities while celebrating local culture and heritage.

The forum concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships and ensuring that tourism growth translates into tangible benefits for communities across the Cape West Coast.

BEYOND THE TAR

Over the next few months, we'll be taking you Beyond the Tar as we showcase some of the West Coast's most scenic and lesser-known gravel roads.

These roads may be less travelled, but they lead to some of the district's hidden treasures — breathtaking landscapes, thriving agricultural lands, peaceful camping spots, vibrant wildflower displays and unforgettable West Coast experiences.

During a recent Portfolio Committee meeting, Councillor Miranda Schrader, who oversees the Roads Portfolio at West Coast District Municipality, acknowledged the dedication and hard work of our roads maintenance teams who keep these vital routes safe and accessible for residents, farmers, businesses and visitors alike.

Maintaining a gravel road involves far more than simply grading the surface. Our teams also ensure that side drains, trenches and culverts remain clear and functional, allowing water to flow away from the road and helping to protect the road network from damage.

📍 Do you recognise the stretch of road featured in these photos?

Keeping Our Roads in Tip-Top Condition

While the sun shone across the broader Swartland region today, our Roads Maintenance teams were hard at work ensuring that residents, farmers, businesses and visitors can continue to travel safely and efficiently.

Our grader operators and road maintenance crews were deployed across the district, restoring and maintaining gravel roads impacted by recent rains. Among the roads receiving attention were the gravel road between Darling and the Hopefield Road, as well as the Rust Stasie Road.

Their work may often happen behind the scenes, but its impact is felt every day. Well-maintained roads improve safety, support local economic activity, ensure access to essential services, and help keep rural communities connected.

A sincere thank you to our dedicated teams for their commitment, professionalism and pride in serving our communities. Your efforts make a real difference and help keep the Swartland moving forward.
