WCDM Strengthens Partnership with Agricultural Sector at Swartland Agricultural Show

“Begeerte vir ’n beter toekoms. Glo in wat bereikbaar is. Kry die hulpbronne om jou plan te laat werk.”

Decision-makers from West Coast District Municipality (WCDM) joined farmers, private sector partners and agricultural stakeholders at a Men’s Breakfast and Networking Session during the Swartland Agricultural Show in Moorreesburg.

WCDM, recently nominated as one of the best-run district municipalities in South Africa, has used its participation at the show as a platform to engage with the agricultural sector on challenges, opportunities and how municipal services can support a stronger rural economy.

Discussions focused on key areas including roads, rural safety, fire management and tourism. WCDM highlighted the importance of its gravel road network, which connects farms to towns and markets, while farmers engaged senior management on road improvement strategies.

Fire and Rescue Services also shared insights with farmers on fire prevention, firebreaks and collaboration between landowners and emergency services following recent wildfires in the Cederberg and Piket-Bo-Berg.

The municipality’s Community and Rural Safety Plan, including technology-driven initiatives such as improved radio communication and drone surveillance, formed part of discussions aimed at enhancing safety in farming communities.

Through its Tourism Expo at the Absa Arena, WCDM showcased how agriculture can create tourism opportunities through local products such as w**e, olives, honey, seafood and artisanal produce.

Executive Mayor Boffie Strydom praised farmers for their resilience.
“You are resilient, you never give up and even when things are stacked against you, you continue to make a plan,” said Mayor Strydom.

Farmers and those in attendance are welcome to engage with the Executive Mayor and Municipal management at the Weskus Expo stand at the Absa Arena.

The Swartland Agricultural Show concludes tomorrow, celebrating agriculture, innovation and partnerships that continue to drive economic growth in the Weskus.

WCDM Supports Tourism Guide Development During Tourism Month

As part of Tourism Month activities, WCDM Deputy Mayor Councillor Sandra Crafford and Manager: Tourism and Destination Marketing, Heinrich Robertson, attended the Western Cape Government Business of Guiding Workshop in Saldanha Bay.

The workshop equipped Tourism Guides with insights into current tourism trends, opportunities and sector developments, and will conclude with a Tourism Guide Certificate Ceremony.

Addressing delegates, Robertson highlighted the important role municipalities play in creating an enabling environment for tourism growth through destination marketing, local economic development and effective service delivery. “Although tourism is private sector-led, municipalities must support the sector by ensuring clean public spaces, reliable infrastructure, effective signage and well-maintained visitor facilities that encourage investment and growth,” said Robertson.

He also congratulated Swartland Municipality and Saldanha Bay Municipality for being recognized among the best-run municipalities in the country, stating that strong local government provides a solid foundation for tourism development across the Weskus.

Tourism Month Launched in the Weskus

Tourism That Gives Back: Green Piketberg Route 366 Showcases Community Tourism

It was another historic day for tourism in the Weskus as the Western Cape Tourism Month Launch brought together tourism stakeholders, communities and partners to showcase how tourism can create hope, opportunities and shared value.

The launch of the Green Piketberg Route 366 highlighted how responsible tourism can benefit local people, businesses and the environment. The journey started in the scenic village of Goedverwacht, where community-based tourism took centre stage.

Local women and small-scale farmers showcased their talents through a traditional bread table featuring homemade products, locally produced cheese and coffee from Berg Coffee. Green Route Maker and farmer Merle Dietrich shared how tourism is connecting community gardens and fresh produce with restaurants and tourism establishments, creating opportunities for local livelihoods.

Delegates explored the Green Piketberg Route 366, including the renowned Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort with its farm-to-table experience, followed by a tea-tasting experience at Carmién Tea, celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage.

Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, said tourism has the power to create shared value for communities, the environment and the economy.

“The Green Piketberg Route 366 is a shining example of how tourism can preserve heritage, support local businesses and ensure that communities benefit from the visitors who experience the beauty and stories of the Weskus,” said Minister Meyer.

With the Municipal Manager of Bergrivier Municipality Adv Hanlie Linde, the West Coast District Municipality Tourism Unit, Bergrivier Tourism and various tourism stakeholders in attendance, Minister Meyer also symbolically planted a tree, marking the start of a new chapter for tourism growth in the Weskus.

The Green Piketberg Route 366 is a reminder that tourism is not only about attracting visitors, but about creating lasting opportunities for communities and celebrating the people and places that make the Weskus unique.

WOMEN IN UNIFORM | LEADING THE WAY IN ROAD SAFETY

As we near the end of Women’s Month, our Community Safety and Tourism units joined various law enforcement agencies in celebrating the women in uniform who serve, protect and make a difference in our communities through their dedicated service.

Throughout August, women from traffic and law enforcement services took centre stage in a series of women-led road safety and enforcement operations across the Weskus. From the N7 Weighbridge to the R45 and communities across Malmesbury, Moorreesburg and Piketberg, these dedicated women demonstrated that leadership, professionalism and service know no gender.

On Friday, a roadblock was held on the R27 highway just outside Langebaan, bringing together women in uniform in a visible demonstration of their commitment to road safety and the protection of road users.

The operations combined high-visibility law enforcement, public transport enforcement, pedestrian interventions and road safety awareness, while highlighting the important contribution of women within traffic law enforcement.

Their presence on our roads is about more than enforcement — it is about creating safer roads, protecting lives and building stronger communities.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, we salute every woman who puts on the uniform and answers the call to serve.

To our women in uniform: thank you for your courage, commitment and dedication. You are an inspiration to us all.
