MOGALE CITY SHOWCASES PROGRESS TO STABILISE WASTEWATER TREATMENT WORKS DURING MEDIA SITE VISIT

Earlier today, eNCA visited the Mogale City Local Municipality’s Percy Stewart Wastewater Treatment Plant amid growing concerns that the facility was still discharging raw sewage into nearby rivers, potentially affecting the Cradle of Humankind, a recognised national heritage site.

Speaking to eNCA, we confirmed that the Percy Stewart plant is currently fully operational and is no longer discharging raw waste into the river system.

We further acknowledged that the plant experienced significant challenges in 2023, mainly due to infrastructure vandalism, ageing infrastructure, and maintenance constraints.

Since then, the municipality has implemented interventions aimed at improving the plant’s effluent quality, with visible progress already being recorded.

Current efforts are focused on resolving the remaining compliance challenges, including:

• Poor influent quality caused by illegal dumping of substances such as oil and other prohibited materials, with stricter monitoring, control, and testing measures now being implemented.

• Disinfection challenges, which are currently being addressed through the commissioning of a new chlorination system.
