A great deal of rehabilitation work is being done on the Reserve, including alien vegetation removal, planting of indigenous trees and erosion control under the auspice of The Endangered Wildlife Trust. The Modderfontein Reserve offers cycling, hiking, running and has a picnic and fishing area that can be visited by the public.

Are you feeling it!?
The August winds bring forth warmer weather!
Ok ok, the last two days have been anything but, however those are the last of July chill as our daylight hours stretch a bit longer!
Which means a bit more chirping and twitching birdlife in the reserve. 🐦

Cant see the woods for the trees? It’s ok we got you!

We appreciate messages from our users rasing concerns around possible tree cutters in the trail park and reserve, particularly considering the current increase in activity.
Rest assured we’ve taken this up and can confirm that these are contractors removing only dead, diseased and/or invasive trees that pose a risk to their immediate surroundings, users and some of the historical buildings on site.

This is done under strict supervision and confirmation before any actions, additionally we’ve tightened up on this process as well to ensure the correct removals are properly undertaken.

Hear that, creatures flocking out again to enjoy the warmer temperatures again. Thankfully the cold front was as short as it was sharp.
Throughout the seasons Modderfontein Reserve contains several ecosystems, ranging from open water bodies, wetlands, rocky outcrop features, urban forests of exotic trees, and various grasslands. It’s amazing to witness the transition between seasons.
We hope you enjoy a well deserved escape this weekend.

Where’d the temperature go! … probably the opposite direction of this fella, wherever they’re going they’re going quick!
Bravo if you played the smart move of getting your reserve visit done this weekend. From tonight the cold front well and truly hits, with a predicted low of 0 tomorrow and -4 on Tuesday!
Fortunately we see a return to normalcy through the week from Wednesday onwards.
We’ll still be open and operating for those of you hardy enough to venture out.
Keep those hands, feet and head warm so long!

Suns out rods out! Nothing casts away life’s troubles like putting out some lines. Especially on weekdays.

We’ve got more plans on the hook for future improvements on the reserve. In the meantime you can check our website for fishing, picnic, lapa hire and general reserve info.

Our Story

Modderfontein Reserve is a 265ha regional open space,situated in Modderfontein, Gauteng. The Reserve boasts amazing birdlife, especially around the three large dams in the reserve. Species include Fish Eagle, Long Crested Eagles, etc. A great deal of rehabilitation work is being done on the Reserve, including alien vegetation removal, planting of indigenous trees, erosion control, etc. Various activities take place in the Reserve, including Cycling , running and walking. There is also a picnic area with braai facilities.
