Commemorating the brave action taken by the youth of 1976 that contributed to South Africa’s emancipation, District officials honoured the heroes of the Soweto Uprising by dressing in uniform, and choreographing a Sarafina dance.

EMBRACING WELLNESS IN COLOUR

Officials in Tlokwe See I've Point, celebrated their Wellness Day dressed in colourful tutu skirts, and colour powder, ready to brighten the streets of Dassierand with colour.

The day kicked off with splashes of colour powder in the air and on t-shirts. A 3km fun walk was taken, preceded by an aerobic session.

The initiative seeks to boost employee morale, and promote healthy and active living amongst officials in the workplace. #,InHealthAndWellness

📸 | JOBS, SKILLS AND BUSINESS TALKS IN RUSTENBURG

As continues, young people in Rustenburg are engaging directly with government and partners in structured spaces where information is translated into access, from jobs and skills to entrepreneurship support.

At the Rustenburg Local Municipality White Hall, this engagement brings together government departments and agencies to respond to youth priorities including unemployment, skills development, entrepreneurship and access to information on available services.

Stakeholders including the Department of Labour of Employment and Labour, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Local Economic Development (LED), the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), and other partners presented programmes focused on job seeker registration, career guidance, business support, mentorship initiatives and voter education.

Young people are being encouraged to actively participate in community structures, utilise available services, and engage in economic and civic opportunities within their communities.

PROMOTING ACTIVE AGEING

Golden Oldies in Maquassi Hills (Wolmaransstad) took to the Leeudoringstad School for the deaf sports ground, to compete in the 2026/27 Golden Games.

Geared up and ready for action, the golden oldies battled it out in a series of activities ranging from jukskei, rugby ball throw, athletics and a choir sing off.

The games serve as a build up to the District Golden Games, were selected participants will compete with golden oldies from other local municipalities within theb Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, for a chance to advance to the Provincial and National Games.

📸 IN PICTURES | Berseba youth connected to digital skills and learning opportunities

The Department , in partnership with SALGA (South African Local Government Association) and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, facilitated a digital skills workshop for young people in Berseba village outside Rustenburg.

Through the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA), participants were assisted to register for free accredited online courses aimed at enhancing their skills and future employment prospects.

From artificial intelligence to digital innovation, the workshop challenged young people to embrace the technologies reshaping industries.

Fifty years on, the spirit of the 1976 generation continues to find expression in programmes that equip young people with the skills, knowledge and opportunities needed to shape their own futures

The workshop focuses on strengthening governance, board roles and responsibilities, financial oversight, compliance reporting, meeting procedures, and risk management to ensure effective service delivery to our senior citizens.

CHILD RIGHTS REMAIN A PRIORITY

As an ongoing initiative to commemorate Child Protection Month, the department hosted an event at Matlosana Child and Youth Care Centre in Jouberton to raise awareness about children's rights, child abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Different speakers touched on topics such as, challenges young boys face, peer pressure, alcohol, substance use, physical and children's me talk health.

Stakehoders present were: Department Of Community Safety and Transport, NPA, SAPS, KOSH Crisis Centre, Patriotic Alliance, Monna Setjhabeng (Men's Empowerment and Community Development Forum).

The message of the day was "Let's protect our children because protecting them means protecting our future."

To conclude, all stakeholders made a pledge stating that they condemn child abuse, neglect and exploitation and that no child will be abused on their watch.

📸 IN PICTURES | Thuntsha Lerole Phase 6 reaches households in Monnakato.

MONNAKATO, RUSTENBURG – MEC for Social Development: Basetsana Sussana Dantjie, accompanied by Head of Department Peggy Mhlongo-Kgaboesele and departmental officials, today visited vulnerable households in Monnakato village as part of Phase 6 of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, Thuntsha Lerole.

The intervention saw the Department provide food parcels and blankets to a 100 profiled beneficiaries from vulnerable households, including child-headed and female-headed households.

Beyond immediate social relief, MEC Dantjie engaged the young people from beneficiary households to identify opportunities for skills development, empowerment and economic participation.

Addressing beneficiaries, MEC Dantjie reaffirmed government's commitment to ensuring that vulnerable members and families receive both immediate support and access to long-term developmental opportunities that can help improve their living conditions and restore dignity.

ACCELERATING SERVICE DELIVERY:

Phase 6 of Thuntsa Lerole took place in Rysmierbult on a chilly Friday, where community members of the area received much needed municipal and departmental services.

Road maintenance, handing of food parcels, tuck shop compliance monitoring, donation of school bags, health screening and NPO registrations, were some of the activities undertaken during the outreach programme.

PHOTOS | MEC Dantjie visits grieving Boitekong family following tragic death of Grade 12 learner

MEC Basetsana Susanna Dantjie visited the family of 18-year-old Olebogeng Felicia Tagote in Boitekong, Rustenburg, to convey condolences and offer support following the tragic death of the Grade 12 learner.

Tagote, a learner at Boikagong Secondary School, was reported missing after she was last seen on Sunday, 31 May 2026, following extra classes at school. Following an intensive search involving community members and law enforcement authorities, her body was discovered on Wednesday, 03 June 2026, leaving her family, school and the broader community devastated.

During the visit, MEC Dantjie met with family members at their home, offering words of comfort and reaffirming government's commitment to supporting families affected by tragedy.

"We share in the pain and grief of the Tagote family during this profoundly difficut time. The loss of a young life with so much promise is deeply heartbreaking. As government, we stand with the family and the broader community as they navigate this painful loss," MEC Dantjie reaffirmed.

The Department will continue to provide the necessary psychosocial and related support services to the family and affected community members.
