ROAD MARKINGS UNDERWAY ACROSS KEY ROADS IN MAHIKENG

The Mahikeng Local Municipality wishes to inform motorists and residents that road markings are currently ongoing on the following strategic roads:

- Provident Road
- Barolong Street
- Moshoeshoe Drive
- Onkgopotse Tiro Drive
- Motsatsi Drive

This intervention forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing Road Safety and Maintenance Programme aimed at improving visibility, guiding traffic flow, and enhancing the safety of both motorists and pedestrians.

The Municipality kindly requests motorists to exercise patience, reduce speed and obey temporary traffic signs where work is in progress.

MUNICIPALITY MAKES PROGRESS ON INTERCONNECTOR ROAD LINKING WARDS 16 AND 30

The Mahikeng Local Municipality is making steady progress with the upgrading of the interconnector paved road linking James Moroka Street and Bray Road to the interlinked cemeteries serving Wards 16 and 30.

The project forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure, accessibility and connectivity across communities.

Once completed, the upgraded road will significantly improve access for residents, particularly during funerals and memorial services, while also enhancing mobility and safety for road users in the area.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality remains committed to investing in infrastructure that responds to community needs and improves the quality of life for the residents of Ward 16 and 30.

SERVICE DELIVERY UPDATE

CUTTING OF TALL TREES – GOLFVIEW, JAN SMUTS STREET

The Mahikeng Local Municipality wishes to inform residents that its Parks and Recreation Unit had embarked on a debushing and cutting of tall trees program in Golfview, Jan Smuts Street.

This intervention forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety, improve visibility, and maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The Municipality kindly requests patience from motorists and residents in the area and other areas we'll be doing while work is in progress. The area will be cleared and cleaned upon completion of the activity.

Eskom North West is aware of power supply interruptions affecting customers in parts of Koster, Lichtenburg, Zeerust, Mmabatho and surrounding areas following adverse weather conditions.

The severe weather has affected several network lines, and restoration attempts have resulted in immediate tripping. Technical teams will continue working to restore supply as soon as weather conditions allow for safe restoration efforts.

Customers are urged to treat all electrical wires, installations and appliances as live at all times and to keep a safe distance from any fallen or damaged power lines.

Eskom apologises for the inconvenience caused and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding while restoration efforts continue. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

MEDIA ALERT / WEATHER WARNING
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FOR MAHIKENG – RESIDENTS URGED TO TAKE PRECAUTION

Mahikeng, 05 September 2026– The Mahikeng Local Municipality wishes to alert all residents that the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the North West Province, including Mahikeng, from Friday afternoon into Saturday evening.

According to SAWS and the North West Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), the province is on high alert for severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, strong and potentially damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail. The system may cause localised flooding in low-lying areas, damage to structures, falling trees, and a significant drop in temperatures.

Current forecast for Mahikeng indicates windy conditions with isolated to scattered thunderstorms expected from this evening into Sunday morning, with a 70% chance of rain.

Residents are urged to:

- Avoid low-lying areas, flood-prone zones, rivers and streams.
- Not attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges or low-water crossings.
- Secure outdoor structures and objects that may be blown by strong winds.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and away from metal structures.
- Drive with caution, keep headlights on and maintain a safe following distance.
- Keep warm as temperatures are expected to drop.

Our Disaster Management and Emergency Services teams are on standby and monitoring the situation in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and District Municipality. We will continue to provide updates should the situation warrant intervention.
