Two survivors. One journey back to the wild.

These vulnerable African Grass Owls were given a second chance thanks to the combined efforts of those who monitored, rescued and rehabilitated them.

A huge thank you to Anton van Niekerk and GEKCO Biodiversity for monitoring the nest and stepping in when the chicks needed help, and to Craig Natras of the Wits Bird Club, who ringed the two survivors before they came into our care.

At FFW, we had the privilege of taking them through rehabilitation, flight training and, ultimately, soft release — exactly where we want every wild patient’s story to end.

🖨️🐾 OUR NEWEST VOLUNTEER HAS ARRIVED! 😂

We’re delighted to welcome a very hardworking new member to the FFW team — an awesome low maintenance EPSON EcoTank all-in-one printer! No more expensive ink cartridges! It’s absolutely perfect for life at our wildlife centre🐦‍⬛

Because behind every wild animal getting a second chance is… apparently… a mountain of paperwork. 🤣

A huge THANK YOU to SYSDBA for thinking of us and donating this wonderful printer. 💚

We promise to keep it busy! 🖨️🐾

🌳 SPRING HAS SPRUNG 🌿

Before you start chopping, cutting or pruning your trees, please stop and check for wildlife.🐣🌿

Baby birds are already hatching and nesting season has begun 🪺🌿That tree you’re about to cut down could be home to some teeny-weeny hatchlings.

💚 Think before you chop. Check for nests. Give wildlife a chance.

A HUGE THANK YOU!

Last week brought not one, but two wonderful donations of food and essential supplies for the animals in our care.

Our heartfelt thanks to Lamelle Research Laboritories and to the incredible students of St Stithians College for thinking of Friends of Free Wildlife and generously collecting and donating much-needed supplies.

Every animal that comes through our doors needs food, care and resources on their journey towards rehabilitation and, wherever possible, release back into the wild.

Donations like these make a very real difference — not only to the animals, but to the people working tirelessly to give them that second chance.

To everyone involved in collecting, organising and delivering these donations: thank you for choosing to support our wildlife. 💚

We are incredibly grateful to have you in our corner.

From all of us at Friends of Free Wildlife — thank you!

WE NEED YOU BACK!

For years, our MySchool supporters have helped Friends of Free Wildlife simply by doing their everyday shopping, at absolutely no extra cost to them.

But things have changed.

The transition from MySchool to MyDifference ends on 31 October 2026. From 1 November, the funding we receive through the programme will be based solely on the number of MyDifference members who have chosen Friends of Free Wildlife as their beneficiary.

And right now, we need your help.

Our supporters have dropped from 631 in June 2025 to just 156 in June 2026. That's a loss of approximately 75% of our support.

If you supported us through MySchool, or if you'd simply like an incredibly easy way to help indigenous wildlife, please join MyDifference and select Friends of Free Wildlife as your beneficiary.

It costs you nothing but those contributions add up, helping us continue the rescue, rehabilitation and release of indigenous wildlife that desperately needs a second chance.

* Go into your Woolies App and it will tell you that there are updates available.
* It may ask you to log in again so the system can pull through your info from the old version.
* There are 5 tabs at the bottom - choose the Loyalty tab (used to be Reward) and then select Causes (beneficiaries)
* Friends of Free Wildlife is listed under "Environment" and not "Animal Welfare". Once in Environment, scroll down and select FFW as your Cause to support 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Happy Birthday to our very special Claudius!

Every creature, no matter how small, overlooked or seemingly insignificant, is important to Clauds. To him, every life matters and every animal deserves kindness, care and a chance.

That compassion is at the heart of everything he does at Friends of Free Wildlife. His dedication to the animals is unwavering, and we are incredibly lucky to have someone who cares for each of them as deeply as he does.

Thank you, Clauds, for the countless lives you’ve touched, the animals you’ve fought for, and the enormous heart you bring to FFW every single day.

We hope today you feel just how loved and appreciated you are.

Happy Birthday, Clauds! ❤️
