CMR Middelburg received the intake of a child who was abandoned at a dumping site in Mhluzi in July 2022. She was found without clothing or any identifying information regarding her biological family.
As she developed, concerns were identified regarding her physical coordination and developmental milestones. She experienced difficulties with head control, balance, movement and coordination. She was therefore referred for assessments by an occupational therapist, optometrist and paediatrician.
The assessments identified difficulties with eye alignment, which affected her balance, posture and coordination. An MRI was also conducted to investigate possible neurological causes; however, no visible brain damage was identified. Medical intervention and developmental support were recommended.
The social worker made several attempts to identify suitable screened adoptive parents in South Africa. Although the child was matched with prospective adoptive parents, the matches were not accepted due to concerns regarding her medical and developmental needs.
In 2024, CMR Middelburg collaborated with ABBA to extend the search internationally. Prospective adoptive parents in Sweden were identified who understood the child's needs and were willing to provide her with a loving and permanent home.
The child's development continued to improve, and she is now able to walk and jump. Although she still requires medical intervention for her eye alignment and support with delayed speech development, her progress has been encouraging.
Before the adoption was finalised, the prospective adoptive parents travelled to South Africa to spend time with her. During this bonding period, the social worker observed positive interactions between the child and the prospective parents. She appeared comfortable in their presence, and a positive attachment began to develop.
On 27 August 2026, the adoption was officially finalised, and the child began her new life with her adoptive parents in Sweden.
This adoption marks a significant new chapter in the child's life. Through the collaboration between CMR Middelburg and ABBA, she has been given the opportunity to grow up in a safe, loving and permanent family environment, with parents committed to supporting her development and providing the care she needs.
From an uncertain beginning to a loving forever home, this story is a reminder of the difference that dedicated social work and collaboration can make in a child's life.
