Wildlife, like Caracal, Red Duiker and Bushbuck are often seen during walks and the chattering monkeys are a favourite visitor too! Our prized cottage, fondly known as the Mountain Pondokkie

, is a heritage site stone cottage, originating from around 1900 in the beautiful valley of Schoemanskloof. It is classified as a heritage building and is surrounded by ancient (and some believe) sacred stone circle ruins. This paradise away from the madding crowds lends itself to retreat into yourself and nature, recharging tired batteries and reconnecting with the inherent peace we find when spending time in untouched bush. The Pondokkie overlooks a small dam in front of the house and is surrounded by indigenous bush. Paths have been cut through the wilderness and the energetic can walk for hours with the mountain, 2 forested gorges, waterfalls and cascades down to the river below, to explore. If you want to travel further afield and discover the offerings in the area we can guide to you as to where to go. Just 15 minutes away, walk the magical labyrinth at Old Joe's Kaia or prebook and indulge in therapeutic massages, reflexology and Reiki treatments, or Yoga sessions. Experience their fabulous cuisine, craft beers and boutique wine list, take a scenic drive to Kaapsehoop (35 kms away) and visit Adam's Calendar by foot or on horseback or simply cloud gaze on the lawn at the Pondokkie. Nature lovers, birders, mountain bikers, hikers and amblers alike will all get their perfect fix here. And those in need of some serious R&R can just sit on the stoep in peace, whilst soaking up the magnificent view.

Samara, my faithful Afrikanis and I went trail marking and found ourselves on the Baboon Plateau Cliffs overlooking the beautiful Schoemanskloof Valley. Nestled in the bush is Khaya Mandevu, our Farmhouse cottage. So secluded and so peaceful. Definitely worth coming to visit. The days are just balmy at the moment as Autumn arrives. ❤️

This weekend family came to visit and took their kids on an adventure along the newly marked paths. The kids had the most amazing fun finding the painted paw prints along the paths to waterfalls, rivers, along red cliffs and into lush gullies. Butterflies, wild bee hives and buck live in this natural paradise. We are kid and dog friendly so bring the whole family to come on our adventures❤️

This morning on my walk, my attention was drawn to the mosses growing on the road and rocks. Im just finishing a book focused on Bryology - the study of mosses. DID YOU KNOW...Ecologically, mosses break down exposed substrata, releasing nutrients for the use of more complex plants that succeed them. They also aid in soil erosion control by providing surface cover and absorbing water, and they are important in the nutrient and water economy of some vegetation types. Mosses existed as early as the Permian Period (298.9 million to 252.2 million years ago). Respect to this humble and often overlooked plant species!

Our Story

Our Schoemanskloof Retreat is situated in the beautiful valley of Schoemanskloof in Mpumalanga, South Africa - about a 2 hour drive from the Kruger National Park. This paradise away from the madding crowds lends itself to retreating into nature, recharging tired batteries and reconnecting with the inherent peace we find when spending time in virgin bush. We are fortunate to be in a malaria-free conservancy which boasts a variety of birds, including Knysna Louries, Narina Trogons and Fish Eagles. Wildlife, like Red Duiker and Bushbuck are often seen during walks and the chattering monkeys are a favourite visitor too! Besides the bush, the Retreat is home to a large number of ancient, stone circle ruins which are of great archaeological interest.

The Retreat has 3 lovely self-catering cottages, each offering a highly individual experience. The Mountain Pondokkie is near the top of the mountain, the Bakoni Hide-Away is also on the upper slopes, and Khaya Mandevu is near the river and 2 dams below. We are delighted to be able to offer health conscious, home-grown and home-made meals prepared by a chef with international experience which can be delivered to your cottage on a pre-booking basis. The cottages all have great mountain views and are surrounded by indigenous bush. Paths have been cut through the wilderness and one can walk for hours with the mountain, 2 forested gorges, waterfalls and cascades, to explore. The farm roads up and down the mountain are great for mountain biking and walking. You could also pre-book and indulge in therapeutic massages, reflexology and Reiki treatments with the therapist coming to your cottage. Or just relax, read and bird watch.

If you want to travel further afield and discover the offerings in the area we can guide you as to where to go. The famous Sudwala Caves with its Dinosaur Park is just 25 minutes away and you can take a scenic drive to Kaapsehoop with its wild horses - about 35 kms away -where you can book to visit Adam's Calendar by foot or on horseback. Or you could take longer trips to the Nelspruit Botanical Gardens, Graskop, Sabie and the Panorama tourist route.

Imagine starting your retreat getaway with a sumptuous meal, walking into your home away from home. Sit down to an elegantly laid table while you unpack and settle in. We will place your pre-ordered meals in the fridge for your arrival and dinner will be ready for you as you walk through the door. We are also able to accommodate any special dietary requirement including vegan, gluten and lactose intolerance and banting friendly.
