HANDOVER OF THE GREENING AND BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

Yesterday 11 June 2026, EDM Acting Executive Mayor Cllr Million Shongwe led the official handover of the Greening and Beautification Project of Mkhuhlu Entrance along the R536 Matikwane Main Road.

The objective is to improve the visual appearance of the Mkhuhlu entrance by creating a welcoming gateway to the Kruger National Park, supporting economic development through improved attractiveness to visitors and potential investors, and promoting community pride. This is a collaboration between EDM, KLCBT, and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.

DDM Awareness Campaign | Lugedlane Traditional Council

11 June 2026, Ehlanzeni District Municipality, together with the Nkomazi Local Municipality, hosted a District Development Model (DDM) Awareness Campaign at Lugedlane Traditional Council to promote community engagement and coordinated service delivery.

Officials shared information on key services including Farming Support, Disaster management, Social Services, Geographic Infomation System (GIS), Municipal health services, and Local economic development (LED). The campaign reinforced government’s commitment to working with communities and traditional leadership to improve service delivery and inclusive development.

CLEANER AIR FOR EHLANZENI | AQMP REVIEW

Ehlanzeni District Municipality hosted a stakeholder engagement on 09 June 2026 at Mbombela Stadium to review our second-generation Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP).

Chaired by MMC for Community Services Cllr M Shongwe, the session brought together the
Portfolio Committee Members, EDM Environmental Management Unit & CWP reps, Local municipalities & govt departments, Sappie Ngodwana, Ngodwana Energy, RCL Foods, Metal Manganese Company & Malelane Stene Bricks, Environmental NGOs & community activists

GM for Community Services Dr ENM Mkhatshwa outlined the purpose to present the draft revised AQMP, review lessons from the 2019 plan, and gather inputs on key interventions.

The Key focus areas discussed includes Air quality monitoring systems, Major emission sources in the district, Implementation challenges since 2019, Public awareness & stronger partnerships

All stakeholder inputs will shape the final AQMP to ensure it’s practical, responsive, and legally aligned.

[STATE OF THE DISTRICT HIGHLIGHT📌]

Over the past four years, the district has installed seven high-mast lights in the City of Mbombela and Nkomazi Local Municipalities. In the current financial year, a further six high-mast lights are under construction. These six installations are currently awaiting Eskom supply connection points, which are in the process of being completed. This investment will contribute meaningfully to safer communities, improved visibility, and enhanced public confidence in the spaces where our people live and move.

WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY CELEBRATION (CATERERS' TRAINING)

EDM, Monday 08 June hosted a training with food caterers, in celebration of World Food Safety Day. Stakeholders present were CityofMbombela, Mpumalanga Department of Health, Small Enterprise Development & Finance Agency - Sedfa, Representatives from Ehlanzeni District Municipality Municipal Health Unit, Local Econonic Development, and Community Services unit.

Participants were equipped with food handling processes, Safety and Hygien, and other important information regarding food safety and food transportation.
