THE EFF STUDENTS COMMAND STATEMENT ON THE MEETING OUTCOMES WITH ZUMA AT UNION BUILDINGS
23 October 2015

The lack of capable leadership within the state will bring this country into its knees. Our analysis was spot on when we heard that Zuma was meeting with students leaders. The attempt by Zuma and the Minister of Higher Education to manipulate students to fall for the temporary measure of 0% fee increment for 2016 will never be celebrated by the EFF Students Command; however we note that it is a step towards the correct direction, we salute the bravery of students across the country who tirelessly showed resilience by putting necessary pressure on the state.
In as much as the focal point of yesterday’s meeting with Zuma turned out be for a 0% fee increment for 2016. Our objective as a political structure was to agitate for the call and advancement of a free quality education as a matter of urgency and most especially understanding the deepening of commodification of education which has precipitated the institutionalisation and coordinated exclusion of black people from the education system, the economy and from all strategic aspects in the land of their birth.
Zuma was told by the EFFSC that the free quality education is one which should entail an education system that is free of the orthodox indoctrination which has defined it for many years due to our historical and neo liberal post –apartheid. We need an education system that will liberate the African mind.
We continuously propose for the introduction of education tax. We further told Zuma that he must give Blade a platform on the proposal we had made earlier in the meeting that he must table the fee free varsity report for discussion in parliament and his response was poor stating that it must be gazetted first.
How can a Minister when the country is literally burning give such a response to a call that would assist in responding to the calls of thousands of South African students? Zuma refused when we raised it in the meeting for Vice Chancellors to tell us how much is in Reserves of some of these universities; his response was that a commission will look into the issue of reserves.
On the critical issue of outsourcing we were flabbergasted by the president to further say there will be an establishment of a separate commission to look at outsourcing in universities. This implies that according to them that the modern slavery must continue up until they come up with a commission which will release a report whose outcomes will not liberate our people.
Zuma was requested to release all brave fighters who were arrested in the protest across the country and he responded by saying he will be interfering with the judiciary. Our interpretation of that is that he only interferes with the judiciary when it suits him and not when students are protesting for a genuine concern.
We are told by Jacob Zuma that there will be a presidential task team which will look in detail the challenges in Higher education. We will reject any presidential task team which will side-line students, especially those belonging to the student movements that have been at the forefront of the struggle.
We know without a doubt that the government has enough money to legislate free quality education for 2016. They just lack the political will or will announce such a decision when they feel it will benefit their 2016 local government elections campaign. That there is a national fiscus constraint is as true as the tooth fairy myth.
We have come to a conclusion that the struggle for free education must not stop because of a temporary 0% fee increment for 2016. We call on all students in all universities to continue with the fight until the government agrees to free education from 2016 and insourcing as a matter of urgency.

EFF Congratulates Students on their Victory on Zero Percent Fee Increment
23 October 2015
The EFF congratulates students for their decisive victory over fee increment for 2016. The announcement by President Zuma that there will be 0% fee increment is demonstration that the people standing together in protest can indeed triumph over a government. The students literally brought the government and university management kicking and screaming to a concession on fee increment through the power of their united and decisive protest voice.
The EFF condemns President Zuma for making this announcement through the media when thousands of students had been waiting on his door step to hear from him. Zuma should have made the announcement to the students as opposed to speaking to them through the media. We also condemn Blade Nzimande’s attitude that if they do not accept the government offer. It demonstrates arrogance and disregard of the collective emotion it took students to arrive at this point of their struggle.
The university management and Minister of Higher Education can now also appreciate that students are a power and societal force that cannot be simply pushed over. The final and lasting solution however remains the provision of free quality education for all academically deserving students. Government must therefore fast track the process towards the realisation of free quality education in order to provide a lasting solution to the problem of fees.
We hope that this concession is not about postponing the real problem to 2017, where there will be a fee increment. The demand of students was very clear that there should be no fees in their historic phrase that . This is the only sustainable solution which can and must be achieved. The EFF calls on government to conclude the process urgently and provide free quality education in 2017. It is not about no fee increment, it is about fees falling – in other words, free quality education. Moreover, all students who owe fees must be relieved from debt so that they can get their academic records and look for jobs.
In addition, students were very clear that fees must fall without a single university worker being outsourced or losing their job. The neoliberal tendency of shifting cost burden on workers, in particular cleaners, plumbers and gardeners must be completely rejected. A truly democratic and transformed university must not have outsourced workers, all must belong fully to the university community.
The zero fee increment is a victory of students; their unity and strength of protest. EFF further condemns the police brutality that has occurred throughout the country in our universities. We call on government to release all students arrested due to the protests and compensate all the injuries caused by police brutality.

The EFF together with the EFFSC is going to reopen all nursing colleges. We will also send a minimun of 5000 young South Afrikans per annum to train as doctors in the best universities across the world. Moreover, we will ensure that healthcare facilities are available communities through Clinics, Hospitals and Community based healthcare workers.

As the EFFSC, we express dismay at the atrocious act of some of the South Afrikan citizens. Attacking foreign nationals will not solve the problems we are facing as a country. We are not going to be silent and watch people commiting such grievous crime. We will fight resolutely, enforce discipline, get rid of the rot, and give constant education.
