Stakeholder Engagement | Community Media Houses
Today, the Office of the Premier hosted an engagement session with community media houses across Mpumalanga. This forms part of a series of ongoing engagements with the sector aimed at strengthening, supporting, and building the capacity of community media practitioners and institutions throughout the province.
As the Spokesperson of the Mpumalanga Provincial Executive Council, MEC Thulasizwe Thomo participated in the important engagement aimed to reinforce provincial government’s commitment in fostering a well-informed society, strengthening partnerships with community media, and ensuring that critical government information reaches communities effectively and timeously.
In Mpumalanga, community radio remains a vital source of information for many residents. An estimated 300,000 people representing approximately 4% of the provincial population rely on community radio stations daily for news, information, and community updates.
Today's session included presentations from key stakeholders such as the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), all of whom share valuable insights and opportunities to support the sustainability and growth of the community media sector.
