Weather Outlook for Free State: Friday, 12 June 2026
==========================
The Free State is looking at a classic, crisp winter day. While daytime temperatures will be relatively pleasant across most regions, you will definitely want to keep a heavy jacket close at hand as single-digit lows lock in across the province once the sun goes down.

Regional Breakdown
The Far North & Plains (Bothaville & Vredefort):
Bothaville will enjoy the warmest daytime temperature in the province, peaking at a pleasant 24°C before dropping sharply to 4°C overnight. Vredefort is right behind it with a clear and sunny 23°C / 4°C. Winds will remain light, coming from the west/northwest at around 8 km/h.

The Heartland & Central Plains (Bloemfontein, Welkom, & Kroonstad):
Bloemfontein will experience clear, blue skies with a high of 20°C and a low of 4°C, accompanied by a gentle northerly breeze at 14 km/h. Welkom (22°C / 5°C) and Kroonstad (21°C / 7°C) will see scattered, partly cloudy conditions throughout the day, but conditions will remain largely comfortable.

The Deep South (Bethulie):
Down near the Gariep Dam, expect slightly cooler daytime conditions with a high of 19°C and a low of 6°C. A moderate westerly wind at 13 km/h will bring a noticeable chill, especially by late afternoon.

The Mountainous East (Harrismith):
As usual, the mountains take the crown for the coldest spot. Harrismith will struggle to a maximum of just 18°C before plunging to a biting 3°C overnight. To make matters feel even colder, a gusty northwest wind at 20 km/h will keep the wind chill factor quite high.

Stricter security measures to protect the metro's water infrastructure
=============================
Following a recent act of vandalism at the Signal Hill Reservoir that disrupted the water supply for several communities, the Mangaung Metro is rolling out stricter security measures to protect its water infrastructure. The latest incident specifically affected residents in areas such as Phomolong, Lourierpark, Phase 2, and Brandpark, though other parts of the metro also experienced shortages due to suspected tampering.

To address the immediate issue, bulk water teams isolated and shut off the damaged valve to stop water loss. While emergency measures have successfully stabilised the system and water supply operations have returned to normal, the metro plans to construct a secure, protected valve chamber to prevent future tampering.

Acting Metro spokesperson Nicolette Maysiels confirmed that teams will continue to closely monitor reservoir levels to ensure ongoing stability. This incident highlights a broader, ongoing challenge for Mangaung, where a combination of ageing infrastructure and persistent vandalism frequently disrupts essential service delivery.
