North West Leopard Research Project

North West Leopard Research Project As a source population, we focuss on the Magaliesberg range as a core study area.

This is the media portal for activities of the state- sanctioned North West Province Leopard Project where we seek through scientific support improved decision making on leopard conservation management throughout the province. Unlike other government departments, we engage in partnerships with private landowners, individuals, NGO's and academic institutions. At present we engage with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Wildlife and Environment Society of Southern Africa (WESSA)

Provincial officials released a male leopard which will be monitored relatively near to its capture origin. The efforts of those who assisted in initial retrieval, subsequent treatment involving teeth remedying are thanked. Owl Rescue centre did sterling work at the start, as well as sponsoring his collar. The Ann Van Dyk Cheetah centre once again housed him during a period of treatment, while vets Dr Cauldwell and Dr Steenkamp did what they do best. Its up to him now to be a leopard again.

In the summer back in 2014, 7 years ago, this is a short 10 minute video describing the post-release monitoring of a collared leopard then that had then given birth. Every now and again animals are remediated and treated for various injures, but there are still far too many that cannot be helped as one often doesn't get there in time to lend a helping hand. This was one of the lucky ones..

Given Heritage day, the provincial leopard conservation officers have asked for such to be presented today, as it was 7 years ago, to the day that this incident took place.

GPS cluster follow ups of collared leopards can be repurposed for extricating these precious animals from snares too.
Till the end of the year we will present monthly video clips showcasing such work, which are a part of what was required for an article the officials published in a British Ecological Society journal.

As per Heritage week, we will post a series of video clips on the work our scientific services officials get up to. Once such activity is that of GPS cluster follows of satellite collared leopards, and this is to examine not just feeding, but general behaviour and condition too. This is unique footage of how leopards live - in many cases - outside protected areas
