In a powerful show of unity and commitment, the North West Gambling Board in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, successfully hosted a Responsible Gambling Public Outreach on 26 March 2026 in Sannieshof under the theme:
“ *Play Smart. Stay Legal. Together We Gamble Responsibly.”*
Led by MEC Bitsa Lenkopane, the outreach brought together key stakeholders including the African Lotteries and Gaming Association (ALGA), National Gambling Board, South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, South African Police Service , and industry operators such as Sunbet, Vukani Gaming, Goldrush and Betfred, all united in driving the message of responsible gambling.
The event opened with a symbolic candle-lighting ceremony, honouring individuals and families affected by irresponsible gambling. The Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge welcomed guests and emphasised the importance of education and community awareness, reminding attendees that gambling should be viewed strictly as a form of entertainment and not a means of making money.
In her keynote address, MEC Lenkopane emphasised that while gambling serves as a vital driver for public revenue, job creation and economic development, it must never be pursued at the expense of individuals wellbeing. She highlighted the importance of balancing the economic benefits of gambling with the need to protect communities. She strongly condemned illegal gambling
operations, particularly those exposing minors through machines in local spaza shops and reiterated that compliance is essential for a sustainable and ethical industry.
The outreach featured engaging discussions, expert presentations and powerful testimonies from a recovering gambler, covering responsible gambling trends, enforcement efforts and available support services. Communities were urged to avoid informal gambling activities, including fafi (“mochina”), dice, cards games, zwepe (coin spinning ) and to differentiate between licensed and unlicensed operations.
The collaboration between the NWGB and key stakeholders reflects a shift from awareness to action, encouraging individuals to take responsibility and make informed choices. This initiative reinforces a shared commitment to protecting communities, strengthening the integrity of the gambling sector and promoting responsible behaviour.
