NORTH WEST RECORDS ONE OF THE HIGHEST TB TREATMENT SUCCESS RATES IN SOUTH AFRICA
Johannesburg – North West Health MEC, Mr Sello Lehari, is part of a high-level government delegation and key stakeholders attending the five-day South African Tuberculosis (TB) Conference currently underway in Johannesburg.
Delivering the opening address, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi underscored the importance of the conference as a platform that brings together government, researchers, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, development partners and communities to share knowledge, innovations and best practices aimed at accelerating efforts to prevent, diagnose, treat and ultimately end tuberculosis in South Africa.
The North West Province continues to demonstrate commendable progress in the fight against TB, recording one of the highest treatment success rates in the country for both drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, MEC Lehari reaffirmed the province’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and sustaining interventions aimed at eliminating TB.
“The North West Province has made significant strides in improving TB treatment outcomes through the dedication of our healthcare workers, community health practitioners and strategic partners. While we are encouraged by our achievements, we remain committed to intensifying efforts to find every missing TB patient, ensure treatment adherence and prevent new infections,” said MEC Lehari.
The MEC further emphasised the importance of collaboration in combating the disease.
“The fight against TB cannot be won by government alone. We will continue to work closely with mining houses, correctional centres, traditional leaders, civil society organisations and all key stakeholders to strengthen implementation of the End TB Campaign and ensure that no community is left behind,” added Lehari.
The conference is expected to provide valuable insights into emerging trends, innovations and strategies that will assist provinces in accelerating progress towards achieving South Africa’s TB elimination targets.
