MEC TLHAPI WELCOMES THE SIU INVETSIGATION ON NTI

MEC for the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Mme Tsotso Tlhapi welcomes the proclamation 348 of by President Cyril Ramaphosa, in authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate the affairs of the North West Transport Investment (NTI) and its subsidiaries.

This development is an important step towards addressing the longstanding concerns surrounding the affairs of the entity and its subcontracting partners and the matter is now subject to an official investigation by the SIU.

“The Department has full confidence in the capacity, expertise and independence of the Special Investigating Unit in conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations levelled against the entity.”

“We trust that the investigation will provide clarity on all allegations currently under scrutiny and, where wrongdoing is identified, we will ensure that appropriate corrective measures are implemented and this includes the recovery of any public funds that may have been unlawfully lost and the prosecution of those found to have acted unlawfully,” said MEC Tlhapi.

She further alluded that the people of the North West deserve a reliable, efficient and accountable public transport system that serves their needs and contributes to the socio-economic development of the province. The Department remains committed in promoting good governance, transparency and accountability in its entities, like the NTI, which falls under the Department.

“We will fully cooperate and support the SIU during this investigation. it is through processes like this which restores public confidence in our department and its entities. This is an era of ensuring that public resources are used appropriately for their intended purpose”, she concluded.

NW COMMEMORATES ONE FALLEN HERO

The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, TsotsoTlhapi together with the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams led the 2026 Commemoration Ceremony in honour of Constable Gift Mota, a South African Police Service fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in February this year while pursuing a suspect.

The event held at Police Commemoration Memorial Site, Westpol Square in Potchefstroom was attended by men and women in blue across all ranks, including his colleagues, alongside Constable Gift Mota's family.

In her address, MEC Tlhapi acknowledged the profound sacrifices made by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), who have lost their lives both on and off duty. She emphasised that police officers are constantly exposed to victimisation and the dangers of living among the very criminals they pursue daily.

"As such, it is our collective responsibility to protect our police officers. Government must strengthen legislation to ensure the protection and safety of law enforcement officers,” the MEC affirmed.

She conveyed her message of condolences to the family, noting that Constable Mota died a hero in the service of the people of the North West.

“The depth of your pain cannot be measured, nor can the void left by his passing, ever truly be filled. Such a loss leaves a wound that time may only soften, but never fully heal. No amount of tribute or pension can compensate for the loss of your son and he can never be forgotten,” she said.

The 25-year-old Constable Mota who was attached to the Visible Policing Crime Prevention Unit in Phokeng police station, died this year in February, while with his colleagues were chasing a suspect allegedly linked to cases of robbery and burglary at Masosobane and Raffredy sections. It is reported that the suspect ran into the nearby dam and during the pursuit, Mota entered the water, where he subsequently disappeared from sight, whilst swimming behind the suspect and his body was later recovered by the SAPS diving unit.

MEC Tlhapi continued to call on communities across the province to work with the police in the fight against crime.

"Our cooperation and partnership across government, citizens and the private sector must be intensified, because government alone cannot combat criminal syndicates taking place in every corner of our townships and villages. Communities must cooperate in providing information and identifying criminals that cause chaos and disruptions in our respective residential arears,” pleaded MEC Tlhapi.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Adams implored the police to continue serving the communities of the North West with pride and dignity in honour of the late Constable Mota, who originates from Ermelo in Mpumalanga and he was transferred to Phokeng in November 2025.

Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Tsotso Tlhapi gives support to the Mota family prior to the commemoration of their son Constable Gift Mota at Police Commemoration Memorial Site, Westpol Square, Potchefstroom.

MEC Tlhapi joined the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, to lead the Annual Provincial Commemoration Service to honour and remember police officers who died in line of duty for the financial year 2025/26.

This year at least the Province commemorates one officer, Constable Gift Mota who is amongst the 12 officers nationally.

REMINDER: ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE – N12 SINKHOLE ASSESSMENT

Motorists are advised of a temporary closure of a section of the N12 on Saturday, 12 and Sunday, 13 September 2026 from 06:00 to 17:00 daily.

This is for a follow-up sinkhole assessment and safety survey by the City, together with the Dept. of Public Safety and SANRAL.

Alternative routes:
Use Vermaasdrif Road → Buffelsdoorn Road → Dr Martin Khunou Ave to rejoin the N12.
Motorists from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom can also use Dr Martin Khunou Ave at Matlosana Mall (Engen Garage) intersection.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead and obey signage and traffic officials on site.

REMINDER: TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE N12 FOR SINKHOLE ASSESSMENT – 12 AND 13 SEPTEMBER 2026

The City of Matlosana Local Municipality, in collaboration with the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and SANRAL, wishes to remind motorists of the planned temporary closure of a section of the N12 for a follow-up sinkhole assessment and safety survey.

Following the initial assessment conducted in August 2026, a further detailed technical assessment is required. The road will therefore be temporarily closed as follows:

Date: Saturday, 12 and Sunday, 13 September 2026
Time: 06:00 to 17:00 daily

Alternative Routes:
Traffic will be diverted via Vermaasdrif Road → Buffelsdoorn Road → Dr Martin Khunou Avenue to reconnect to the N12.
Motorists travelling from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom can alternatively use Dr Martin Khunou Avenue at the Matlosana Mall (Engen Garage) intersection.

Motorists are advised to plan their trips in advance, exercise patience, and obey traffic officials and temporary signage on site.
