Ridgeway College Unites for a Night of Football, Community and Bafana Pride.

Ridgeway College is gearing up for an unforgettable night as learners and parents come together to watch Bafana Bafana take on Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What would normally be an ordinary Thursday evening is about to transform into a full‑scale community celebration — Ridgeway style.

The school’s large hall will be converted into a vibrant fan zone, complete with a massive projector, powerful speakers, and the kind of electric atmosphere only South Africans can generate when Bafana Bafana walks onto the pitch.

The goal is simple: bring the Ridgeway community together, celebrate the spirit of the game, and kick off the World Cup with unity, noise and colour.

Food and refreshments will keep the energy high throughout the night. A variety of non‑alcoholic drinks, snacks, and confectionaries will be on sale, ensuring that supporters can settle in, enjoy the match, and share the excitement with friends and family.

From the first whistle to the final minute, the hall will echo with cheers, commentary, and the unmistakable rhythm of South African football culture.

More than just a screening, the event is a reminder of what makes Ridgeway College unique: a community that shows up, stands together, and celebrates together.

Whether you’re there for the football, the atmosphere, or simply the joy of being part of something bigger, this promises to be a night to remember.
One game. One community. One Ridgeway experience.

The Netball season opened with fiery results as Ridgeway College faced Champions Academy.
The Junior team dominated 17–1, with Zoe, Murendwa, and Lungile delivering clinical finishing in the shooting circle.

The Senior girls were equally ruthless, overwhelming their opponents with a commanding 28–3 victory. With Provincial‑level competitors such as Nhlawuleko Hlavangani and Vhugala Mafela on the squad, such performances come as no surprise.

Although neither athlete progressed to Provincials this year, their superlative skill and on‑court leadership were unmistakable as both shooters steered their teams to emphatic wins.

Ridgeway College extends sincere appreciation to Ms Ntuthang and Coach Melody for the dedication, expertise, and countless hours invested in developing our netballers.

Subject Integration at Ridgeway College:

At Ridgeway College, learning is designed to be connected and meaningful. Subject integration brings together knowledge, skills and concepts from different subjects so learners can see how ideas link across disciplines.

This approach strengthens understanding, improves retention and builds confident critical thinking and problem solving skills, while making learning more engaging and relevant.

This term, Mr Dhlamini (Social Sciences) and Mr Dibakwane (Natural Sciences) collaborated on an integrated project combining:

- History: The Nuclear Age and the Cold War
- Natural Sciences: Acids, Bases and Chemical Reactions

Learners explored how scientific discoveries in chemistry contributed to the development of nuclear technology and nuclear weapons. They investigated the scientific principles behind chemical substances, reactions and radioactive materials, while also examining the political and social impact of nuclear weapons during the Nuclear Age.

Through experiments, discussions and collaborative tasks, learners connected historical events with scientific concepts — gaining a deeper understanding of how science, technology and society influence one another.

Ridgeway College thanks Mr. Dhlamini and Mr. Dibakwane for devising such inclusive and academically sound global teaching practices.

PHAPHUKA LOWAN: RISING WITH INTENTION — FROM MATRIC 2021 TO DOUBLE GRADUATE IN 2026

At just 23 years old, Phaphuka Lowan stands as a powerful example of what happens when discipline meets purpose. When he walked out of high school in 2021, he carried with him the same uncertainty many young people feel — the pressure to choose a path, the fear of choosing the wrong one, and the quiet hope that life would guide him where he was meant to be.

Today, in 2026, he is a double graduate, having completed both his BCom in Financial Accounting and his Diploma in Business Administration in record time. His journey is not just an academic achievement; it is a story of growth, clarity, and the courage to commit to a future that once felt out of reach.

What makes Phaphuka’s story remarkable is that accounting was never his first dream. He once imagined himself in mechanical engineering — a completely different world. But life has a way of redirecting us toward the places where our strengths can flourish. When he stepped into the world of accounting, something clicked. What began as a degree he never planned to pursue became the field he fell in love with.

Along the way, he discovered the truth behind a phrase he had heard many times but never fully understood:
“You’re in charge of your future.”

Back then, it sounded like a cliché. Now, after years of sacrifice, late nights, and relentless focus, he understands it deeply. You reap what you sow. The thoughts you entertain, the habits you build, the work you put in when no one is watching — these are the seeds that shape your destiny.

Phaphuka believes that a goal without daily action is nothing more than a fantasy. You cannot dream your way into success; you must work your way into it. A seed that is never planted, watered, or nurtured will never grow. His academic journey reflects this truth: consistent effort, intentional choices, and a refusal to give up even when the road felt overwhelming.

Now, with two qualifications behind him, he is setting his sights on becoming a professionally designated accountant. The path ahead is challenging, and he admits that some days it feels almost impossible. But impossibility has never stopped him before. If anything, it has pushed him to rise higher.

His story is a reminder to every young person that your future is not determined by where you start, but by what you choose to nurture. It is a reminder that discipline is a form of self‑love, and that the life you want is built quietly, consistently, and intentionally.

Phaphuka Lowan has planted his seeds — and his future is already beginning to bloom.

Ridgeway College Library Reopens After Six Years!

After six long years, the Ridgeway College Library has reopened its doors — a milestone that carries deep meaning for our school community.

The Covid‑19 era left a legacy we are still working to unravel. In the aftermath of the pandemic, Ridgeway lost the skilled librarians who once managed our systems and nurtured a culture of reading. Without the necessary personnel and under various operational constraints, our cosy library fell silent.

Six years later, that silence has finally been broken.

Deputy Head Boy, Mulamuleli Netshifhefhe, took it upon himself to revive the space. With remarkable initiative, he gathered a team of passionate readers — Mashudu, Londani, Khuliso, Fhatutshedza, and Thabo — and partnered with dedicated reading crusader Ms Guptar. Together, they cleaned, reorganised, and restored the library.

They even launched a book drive, fittingly held on Shakespeare’s birthday, to celebrate the rebirth of reading at Ridgeway.

The team has committed to learning the checkout system and staying after school so that learners can once again borrow books and rediscover the joy of reading.

In an age dominated by digital noise and instant information, this initiative from such young people is both heartening and hopeful. Their hunger for knowledge, their willingness to serve, and their belief in the power of books reflect the values we strive to nurture at Ridgeway College.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mula and his team for their leadership, dedication, and vision. They have not only reopened a library — they have reopened a world of imagination, curiosity, and possibility for every learner.

Ridgeway College is proud to celebrate an extraordinary academic achievement by one of our Grade 9 learners, Katlego Sebola, who has excelled in the International Benchmark Tests (IBTs) for both English and Mathematics.

The IBTs, developed by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER), are written by tens of thousands of candidates worldwide and are designed to assess higher‑order thinking, problem‑solving, and deep comprehension. Ridgeway College registers all students for these assessments to benchmark our standards internationally and expose learners to diverse approaches to academic challenge.

This year, 38 626 candidates wrote Mathematics and 40 921 candidates wrote English.
Against this global field, Katlego’s results were nothing short of exceptional:

English

- 100th percentile in the school
- 99.9th percentile in South Africa
- 99.6th percentile internationally

Mathematics

- 100th percentile in the school
- 97.1st percentile in South Africa
- 93.5th percentile internationally

These results place Katlego among the top performers not only at Ridgeway College, but in the country and across the world. They reflect remarkable comprehension, analytical strength, and an impressive ability to apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts — exactly the kind of thinking the IBTs are designed to measure.

Ridgeway College is incredibly proud of Katlego’s dedication, discipline, and talent. We congratulate him on this outstanding achievement and look forward to seeing how he continues to grow, excel, and inspire others.

Limpopo has two rising stars who are proving that talent, discipline, and family support can take you all the way to the national stage.

This year, both Nduvho (Grade 12) and his younger sister, Vhugala (Grade 9), qualified for nationals in the jumps — an achievement made even more impressive by the fact that they are completely self‑taught.

For Nduvho, the journey through the first three rounds felt easy, but the final round tested him. The weather flipped between rain and sun, and his first two attempts were no‑jumps.

Under pressure, he delivered a massive 14.00 meter jump — comfortably above the 13.85 qualifying mark. He didn’t even need the extra attempts. Representing Limpopo again means everything to him, especially knowing he is self-taught from Grade 9 to matric.

His sister, Vhugala, had her own breakthrough season. She competed in long jump, high jump, and triple jump, making it through four rounds in all three events. The final round in Polokwane came with nerves, doubt, and rain, but she pushed through and jumped 9.78 metres to place second. She didn’t think it would be enough to qualify — so when she found out she made it, the excitement was unreal. After not qualifying last year, this moment became proof of how far she’s come.

What makes their story even more powerful is the family behind it. With no formal coach, they rely on each other and on the guidance of their older brother, a Ridgeway alumnus who set the standard. Thendo now mentors Vhugala, sharing everything he learned so she can grow faster and avoid the mistakes he made. Their bond is strong, supportive, and fiercely protective — the kind of sibling energy that builds confidence and resilience.

The Mafela siblings are showing what it looks like to rise through challenges, stay disciplined, and represent their province with pride.

As we round the corner of the last days of our much‑earned holiday, we reflect on some of the dynamic lessons that shaped Term 1—among them, Pie Day, an initiative by the Mathematics Department that invited learners to engage with mathematics lyrically, dramatically, and creatively.

Through lateral thinking, performance, and problem‑solving, students explored the beauty of logic and proved an old genius right:

“Art is intelligence having fun.”

This spirit of joyful learning sets the tone for Term 2—an important examination term that rigorously assesses students’ understanding across multiple subjects. It is a period defined by focus, discipline, and revision.

Yet, as our Head of Mathematics, Ms Moipolai, continues to demonstrate, meaningful academic preparation does not need to be dull or intimidating. With the right approach, revision can be energising, memorable, and deeply effective.

Ridgeway College extends its gratitude to Ms Moipolai and to all our dedicated staff for the creative, out‑of‑the‑box, and impactful lessons they design. Their commitment to excellence ensures that our learners experience education that is both challenging and inspiring.

Ridgeway’s seniors don’t get the luxury of educational tours.

Their journey looks different—dense IEB syllabi, relentless academic expectations, and the kind of pressure that leaves no space for leisurely excursions. In fact, there’s barely time for the syllabus itself, which is why Ridgeway augments the timetable with free, compulsory Saturday classes. It’s demanding, it’s intense, and it’s the reality of striving for excellence in a national arena where top achievers compete against the best in the country.

And yet, in the middle of this academic marathon, something remarkable happens.

For one afternoon—five golden hours—our seniors, joined by a few heroic Grade 10s fresh off a twelve‑hour bus ride from KZN, get to simply be. They play. They laugh. They showcase talents of… varying quality. They breathe. They remember that joy is not a distraction from hard work; it is fuel for it.

Because the truth is: not every test goes well. Not every day feels manageable. Grade 11s are already staring down university applications. Matrics are carrying the weight of futures they’re still trying to imagine. The stakes are high, and the pressure is real.

So when we create safe, supervised, celebratory spaces for our students to connect, unwind, and feel human again, it isn’t frivolous. It’s a deliberate act of care. It’s our nod to mental health. It’s our way of saying: You matter beyond your marks.

Seniors’ Night was a resounding success—joyful, spirited, and restorative. Ridgeway College extends heartfelt thanks to Mr. Elimu and Mrs. Ntuthang for their tireless fundraising and unwavering commitment to our students’ wellbeing.

Their work made this moment possible.
Our students made it meaningful.

🔥 The hall is absolutely electric. Our 2026 Leader Council—fronted by the unstoppable spirit duo, Shazana and Victor—has turned the partially sponsored Shandukani Hall into a full-blown festival of Ridgeway pride.

Those sponsored drums aren’t just being used… they’re being summoned, thunder rolling off the walls as the council drives the rhythm of a school that refuses to do anything halfway.

It’s chaos, but the good kind—the kind that reminds you why school spirit is a force of nature. The council stands tall on the stage, leading the charge like seasoned performers, hitting every beat of their portfolios: energy, enthusiasm, engagement.

They’re not just fulfilling their roles; they’re redefining them.

It’s the kind of moment that makes school unforgettable. A hall full of teenagers who believe in something bigger than themselves, a council who leads from the front, and a community that knows how to raise a roof and a standard at the same time.
