The Deputy Minister conducted an oversight visit to the Lichtenburg landfill site. After having assessed the Lichtenburg landfill site, Deputy Minister Swarts has declared the Lichtenburg landfill site to be illegal, and she resolved to decommission it to mitigate the risk factors to the community of Lichtenburg and the surrounding areas.
The Deputy has instructed the municipality to speedily look for an alternative site for the establishment of the new landfill site. The Deputy Minister was worried about the fact that the municipality is servicing only Lichtenburg town on waste collection and is unable to render such services to other areas of the municipality due to a lack of waste management specialized vehicles. From the Lichtenburg landfill site, the Minister's entourage had visited the Tlhabologang/ Coligny landfill site to assess its status. The non-compliance of the four municipal landfill sites was a cause of concern for the Deputy Minister.

Power outage update

Customers are hereby informed that the municipality has not yet restored power in the Burgersdorp and Serder Park section and the surroundings since yesterday. Please note that the power outage is being caused by a cable fault.

However, we could not trace the exact faulty section on Saturday because the cable fault locating machine, which identifies the faulty part, would only be available on Sunday, 31 May 2026.

We advise that all our plant and equipment be treated as live at all times, as power can be restored at any time without prior notice.
