Nyandeni Local Municipality

Nyandeni Local Municipality NLM consists of two magisterial towns Libode and Ngqeleni. Libode is 30km away from the city of Mthatha on the way to PSJ(R61) and Ngqeleni is 23km.

The Nyandeni Local Municipality is situated in the area which is commonly known as Western Pondoland. It is the traditional home of the Amampondo people. The legend recount that the kingdom of King Faku and his son Ndamase, decided to expand the kingdom with his son moving to the land West of the Umzimvubu River. However when they arrived at the river it was in flood, the only way they could cros

s the river was to use the nyanda(The tradition name of the bundle of wood usually collected women) they used nyanda as their flotation device. They settled by on the Western side of the Umzimvubu river in what is today Nyandeni (place of the bundle of firewood) it consists of two magisterial towns Libode & Ngqeleni. Libode is 30km away from the city of Mthatha on the way to Port St Johns (R61), Ngqeleni is 23km away from Mthatha.

*COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE SOUGHT TO LOCATE LIBODE MISSING PERSON*

*LIBODE: 03 JUNE 2026*.Libode police are asking for community assistance to locate missing forty (40) year old female, Norolela Gcotyelwa of Nonzame locality, Sibangweni A/A in Libode, who was last seen on the 25th of December 2025 in East London.

She was working as a school clerk in Tsolo until 2022 and anyone who has information about her whereabouts should contact Libode Police Station Detective - Constable Lubuzo at :0714752181 or any nearest Police Station nor dial Crime Stop Number 0860010111.

RDP House Handover | Two Wards in Two Days

Nyandeni Local Municipality continues to restore dignity and improve the lives of our people through the handover of RDP houses, each with a 500L water tank and toilet.

This handover will take place in Ward 11, Ngolo Village, and Ward 24, Malungeni A/A, over two days.

This is more than just a house handover this is dignity restored, hope renewed, and a better future built with the people.

🕊️ HISTORY HAS NO BLANK PAGES 🕊️

Today, we pause to honour the life and legacy of a true pioneer, a visionary leader, and the very first Mayor of Nyandeni Local Municipality, Cllr Patric Makasi Diniso.

His passing marks the end of an era in the history of our municipality. As one of the architects of developmental local government in Nyandeni, he laid a firm foundation upon which many of the gains and achievements of today continue to stand.

Serving as the first Mayor from 2000 to 2006, Cllr Diniso dedicated his life to the advancement of our communities, championing service delivery, development, and the empowerment of our people. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to public service will forever remain etched in the hearts of the people of Nyandeni.

Though history has left a blank page, his legacy will continue to fill the chapters that follow.

Our deepest condolences go to the Diniso family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable leadership.
