On Thursday 6 July 2023 Steve McKean from Conservation Outcomes came to Ingula to conduct an investigation. NGS Conservation Officers along with Carina Pienaar and Steven Segang of Birdlife South Africa and Malcolm Drummond representing the Ingula partnership (BLSA, Eskom and the Middelpunt Wetland Trust) joined him for a biomass/grass fuel load assessment of key grassland areas of the nature reserve. Using a disc pasture meter( in the images below) a device featuring a disc of a known diameter and weight on a tube assembled on rod marked to measure the height that the disc stops above the ground when released, this gives an indication of the amount of grass holding the disc above the ground at the specific point tested. After testing a sufficient number of points in an area the average grass fuel load for the area can be determined.
This data can be used in conjunction with remote sensing methods to determine which areas of a veld need to be burnt, grazed, or rested and can be used to assess the effectiveness and impacts of the management practices of the reserve, farm, or land being assessed.
