[📌📢VOTER REGISTRATION WEEKEND📢📌]

The Electoral Commission of South Africa has announced Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 2026 as the official voter registration weekend for the upcoming local government elections.

Voting stations will open from 08h00 to 17h00 on 20 and 21 June 2026. New voters are invited to visit their nearest voting station to register to vote, while existing voters are reminded to update their registration details.

You are eligible to register to vote if you are:

o A South African citizen;
o At least 16 years old (you can only vote from age 18); and
o In possession of a green bar-coded ID book, smart ID card or temporary identity certificate.

Eligible voters can register to vote or update their details using the official IEC online portal – https://registertovote.elections.org.za which is available 24/7.

Citizens are urged to be vigilant and avoid clicking on suspicious links or accessing fake websites that impersonate the domain of the Electoral Commission of South Africa.

STATEMENT BY JOE MOROLONG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY ON THE CARDINGTON BRIDGE INTERVENTION - 18 JUNE 2026

Joe Morolong Local Municipality has noted with concern the recent public statements regarding the closure of the illegal bypass at Cardington and the interventions currently being undertaken by the Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works.

The Municipality wishes to reaffirm its full support for the efforts led by the MEC for Roads and Public Works, Ms Fufe Makatong, aimed at restoring access to affected communities and ensuring that all interventions are undertaken within the confines of the law and in accordance with the highest standards of public safety.

The meeting convened on 08 June 2026, attended by the MEC, the Mayor of Joe Morolong Local Municipality Cllr. Dineo Leutlwetse-Tshabalala, The Ward Councillor and Member of EXCO Cllr. Goitseone Pako Kaotsane accompanied by Municipal Manager, Management, Community representatives and other stakeholders, was intended to provide progress updates and to introduce the contractor appointed to construct a lawful and safe temporary bypass following the collapse of the Cardington Bridge during the recent floods.

The Municipality wishes to place on record that there was broad consensus that the unauthorised crossing, established in the aftermath of the disaster, could not serve as a permanent solution and that its closure was necessary to facilitate the implementation of an engineered and legally compliant alternative route.

Let it be stated unequivocally that the Municipality cannot and will not condone illegal activities or support the continued use of infrastructure that has neither undergone engineering assessments nor received the necessary approvals from competent authorities. Government has a constitutional obligation to ensure that public infrastructure is safe, lawful and fit for purpose.

While the Municipality recognises the legitimate concerns of farm dwellers, workers, educators, healthcare personnel and communities affected by the temporary closure of access routes, these concerns cannot supersede the imperative to protect human life and prevent avoidable tragedies.

The Municipality remains committed to ensuring that these concerns are addressed through continuous engagement with affected stakeholders and through the provision of practical and sustainable solutions.

At a time when communities are recovering from the devastating effects of recent floods, elected representatives and all stakeholders should place the interests of affected residents.

The Mayor and Council remain fully aligned with the position articulated by the MEC for Roads and Public Works. The Provincial Government and the Municipality stand united in their commitment to restoring access, constructing a lawful temporary bypass and rebuilding the Cardington Bridge.

Government's position remains clear and unwavering. The law exists to protect our communities.

Joe Morolong Local Municipality calls upon all stakeholders, including public representatives, to support ongoing interventions, respect the rule of law and work together to ensure that the people of Cardington and surrounding areas receive the safe and sustainable infrastructure they deserve.

📢 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETING IN CARDINGTON VILLAGE - JTG DISTRICT

The MEC for Roads and Public Works, Ms Fufe Makatong, will engage with the community of Cardington Village to discuss the construction of an unauthorised bypass road and to formally introduce the appointed contractor responsible for the construction of a bypass.

Community members are encouraged to attend and participate in this important engagement.
