The Kloof: Unique green urban area - NO amount of money, oil or gold is worth more than the bees, trees and clean water

The Kenmare Kloof is located in the Kenmare suburb of Krugersdorp, Gauteng, South Africa. The Kloof is part of the Roodekrans Ridge which was formed 2 billion years ago when an asteroid of 10Km hit the earth about 100km south of present Johannesburg and left a crater of about 300 km wide. Most of the crater walls washed away from erosion through the ages. Remaining walls are part of the ridges of the Vredefort Dome, which is a World Heritage site. The ridges and koppies are found near Vredefort in the Free State and as far as Pretoria in the north. Noordheuwel, Roodekrans, Rangeview, Silverfields and Brendan. There are many more suburbs along the Greater Ridge, which runs from Constantia Kloof in the east to the Krugersdorp Game Reserve in the west.

Within the Roodekrans Ridge are located the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, as well as the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. An abundance of unique plants are found on the ridge and its kloofs. This is the only place in the world where the Albertina Sisulu Orchid grows. Small game, from duiker to jackal are also found, and the bird life is varied. Being part of this unique urban green belt, the Kenmare Kloof deserves to be conserved for future generations to enjoy. The west of Johannesburg is one of the fastest urban growth areas. The Kloof should be part of a green corridor to ensure that endemic plants and animals are able to survive here. The Kenmare Kloof Conservation Association was founded by residents of the Kenmare suburb. The aim of the Association is to contribute to the conservation of the Kloof by maintaining and improving its pristine state. Invasive species such as the Black Wattle threatens the Kloof’s ecological state. Rubbish dumped by inconsiderate citizens is another matter of concern.

We endeavour to have the Kenmare Kloof to be formally incorporated in the green regions already set aside with government approval. We wish to turn the Kloof into its full potential to once again regain its unique character, which has been neglected by the authorities.

If you are concerned, join us in our efforts!
