*ANC/PA/EFF/PBI refuse crisis in Knysna continues*

By Thandi Maxim and Cleone Vanston – DA Councillors, Knysna

*Release: Immediately*
*Date: 14 February 2024*

Earlier this week, the DA in Knysna conducted an oversight visit to the waste transfer station in the Knysna CBD. Uncovering a troubling reality that has plagued residents and businesses for months.

Out of twelve waste trucks, a shocking nine are out of service, leaving only three operational to serve all 11 wards in the municipality. This logistical nightmare, compounded by severe maintenance issues at the transfer station, hampers the timely collection and transporting of waste to the PetroSA landfill site in Mossel Bay.

The consequences of poor governance by the ANC/PA/EFF/PBI Coalition of Corruption are evident in the total collapse of basic service delivery in Knysna and Sedgefield.

The growing backlog of refuse not collected, have breached the two weeks mark in some areas. And desperate residents are resorting to illegal dumping and burning waste in the streets. This has become a health hazard to residents and tourists who are exposed to these illegal dumping sites on a daily basis.

Despite relentless pleas to the Coalition of Corruption for effective communication and management improvements, the council cannot do its most basic job. We reiterate our call on the MMC of Community Services, PA councillor, Waleed Grootboom, to exercise better oversight and address the evident breakdown in waste management.

Despite the provincial government’s assistance, their failure to stay ahead of this crisis is unacceptable. We demand effective solutions, proactive problem-solving, and transparent communication. The Coalition of Corruption must prioritize the welfare of Knysna and its residents over selfish personal and political ambitions.
