Let's keep our eyes on the road this holidays, drive with extra care as roads can be slippery or have potholes. But nothing gives ease like knowing help is just a distance away, thank you to the paramedics that never tire to show up and offer life saving support.

Yesterday evening Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service responded to the R34 John Ross highway for reports of a collision.

When emergency services arrived they found that a vehicle had lost control and overturned.

Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that 1 patient had sustained serious injuries and 2 patients had sustained minor injuries.

The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment.

Patient attacked & killed by mob justice group in Atteridgeville

The recent harrowing event on the 22 November 2022 that occurred in the Atteridgeville informal settlement should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

The South African Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is suffering from a severe shortage of both medical vehicles (ambulances) and a shrinking workforce.

According to a research paper (TimesLive), the latter is being lost at an alarming rate “South Africa is bleeding Advance Life Support (ALS) at an alarming rate,” the skill is said to be lost to countries such as the UK. With physical abuse at 45.5%, verbal abuse at 20%, and unclassified at 34.5% citing safety & security as a major concern.

Currently there are under 66 100 paramedics in South Africa, divided between: (1600) ALS- Advance Life Support, (8 500) ILS- Intermediate Life Support and (56 000) BLS- Basic Life Support.

According to the World Health Report, in order for South Africa to render efficient pre-hospital care, they ought to be a ratio of 1:10 000 (one ambulance for 10 000 of the population) in order to meet the set standard; the department of health committed to 5 700 ambulances, however to date they are only 1 976 with 100 always out of operations according to Bhekisisa. (https://bhekisisa.org/article/2018-12-11-00-how...)

The report further indicates there should be a ratio of 1:10 000 for ALS (Advanced Life Support) for one population, but SA currently has a ratio of 1:40 000.

The picture of a dire sector couldn’t be more vividly painted and you will be amiss to think communities will comprehend this/their reality.

Yet we continue to hear similar reports to this one.
As a result, ambulances may choose not to respond to these areas or may delay response times; potentially resulting in the loss of lives (Known to notoriously affect townships & rural areas more).

In seeking retribution from the alleged perpetrator the community endangered lives of these paramedic personnel. (A scarce resource we lacking).

Tomorrow it will be us again the community protesting at the lack of sight of this medics.

Even in the heat of battle, we must remember our humanity and that all lives are valuable and must be protected.

Emergency Medical Services is one sphere of health that is underpinned by severe challenges not limited to vehicle & staff shortages but extends to equipment etc.

Let us not make their work anymore unbearable than it already is.
In heated exchanges may we remember our humanity, the Ubuntu principle we’ve come to be famous off across the globe.
To the paramedics affected may you find healing.

To department heads, we invite you to become accustomed with solutions seeking not only to render efficient care to patients but significantly contribute in redressing challenges in systems- reducing safety & security concerns for all parties concerned in emergencies.

Limpopo department of Health fires 21 emergency service workers-https://lnkd.in/dJJCsHjE

The Limpopo Department of Health fired 21 paramedics after a lengthily process involving labor unions and the CCMA, as reported in the Sunday papers, on 19 November 2022.

You may wonder 'why you ought to care’ and if they will be any ramifications/impediments on service delivery in Limpopo this festive season?

Well let us unpack it for you.

The dismissal is largely due to their failure to comply with the HPCSA, according to the articles.

So what is HPCSA?

The South African Health Professions Council (HPCSA) is a statutory body established by the Health Professions Act to protect the public and guide the Professions.
This body is required by law to be followed by all health professionals.

As it stands, currently in South Africa there are approximately 66 390 origination where paramedics can affiliate, each with its set membership fees.

These affiliations and compliance are important in ensuring that healthcare standards are followed and maintained.

It is therefore critical that those working in the industry comply with the set standards.

The dismal of the 21 paramedics is however unfortunate and could have been avoided, if the department was conducting regular checkups and had monitoring systems in place.

Though this is unfortunate it presents an opportune opportunity to all departments of health; to re-evaluate their strategies & align, adapt and adopt new technologies.

The 4IR has presented a unique opportunity to the South African Healthcare ecosystem most especially public to move away from legacy systems of silo effects and manual labour (prone to error) to more effective tech savvy innovations.

The mHealth Strategy drafted in 2013 makes a provision for the department to work with emerging innovators & entrepreneurs to solve such challenges.

It will immensely benefit such departments to acquaint themselves with local innovations and innovators seeking to improve the above-mentioned challenges.

At Yvonne Paramed we provide a mobile solution that is customer centric and rooted in enhancing reporting and compliance matters for both managers and paramedics.

Major obstacles faced by EMS Personnel.

🔜When paramedics fail or delay arriving in a medical emergency situation, the public frequently blames them without understanding the challenges they face in providing their services.

🛣️But have we ever questioned why this is the case consistently, even in locations where we believe access is feasible because the location is urban or more developed.

⏱️Due to a severe shortage of emergency medical personnel in South Africa, paramedics are forced to work long hours.

💉In ambulances, paramedics frequently work with limited medical supplies such as oxygen; these are some of the factors that contribute directly to the challenges that paramedics face on a daily basis.

👏🏼Let us be compassionate the next time we see a paramedic on duty. Because paramedics are not our adversaries, let us show empathy when we see them performing their duties.

😊So the next time you see a paramedic reach out to them with a smile, as they are often on the go while trying to save lives.
