ROAD CLOSURES AND HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS
Date: 03 June 2026.
Residents and road users are hereby advised that, due to ongoing rainfall and rising water levels, several roads within the Kouga region have become unsafe for travel. The Roads and Stormwater Department is continuously monitoring the situation and urges the public to avoid affected areas and make use of alternative routes where possible.
THE FOLLOWING ROADS ARE CLOSED OR CONSIDERED HIGH RISK:
❌ Felix Street, Humansdorp – CLOSED
Felix Street has become extremely dangerous due to severe road deterioration and saturated ground conditions. Small vehicles are at risk of becoming stuck and the road is therefore closed until further notice.
Road users are requested to utilise alternative routes(Lawrence Street )
❌ R102 between Mondplaas and Steel Bridge
Motorists are advised to avoid this section of the R102 due to:
1. Significant water build-up on the roadway
2. Numerous potholes and deteriorated road conditions
3. Reduced visibility and increased risk of vehicle damage
Extreme caution is advised should travel be unavoidable.
❌ R102 past the Ferry Turn-off towards Thornhill
Rockfalls have been reported along this section of the route.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution as additional rockfalls may occur due to continued rainfall and unstable slopes.
❌ Gravel Road along the Gamtoos River
The gravel road from the tar road turn-off along the Gamtoos River has become extremely muddy and is currently not suitable for normal passenger vehicles or light delivery vehicles.
FLOODING ALERTS
⚠️ Cnr of Duine and Haring Street
Water levels are rising rapidly, and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
⚠️ Dolphin Drive, Ocean View
Floodwaters are rising onto the road surface, creating hazardous driving conditions.
⚠️ Apiesdraai
Water levels are increasing, and the area is being closely monitored.
⚠️ St Croix
Flooding has been reported, and road users are advised to avoid the area.
⚠️ Gamtoos Mondplaas Turn-off on the R102
The turn-off has been affected by flooding, and motorists are advised to proceed with caution or make use of alternative routes.
IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE
1. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or low-water crossings.
2. Turn around and seek an alternative route if water is flowing across the roadway.
3. Adhere to all road closure signs and instructions from emergency personnel.
4. Motorists should expect changing conditions as rainfall continues.
The emergency services remain on high alert and will continue to assess conditions throughout the affected areas.
