MEC FUFE MAKATONG MESSAGE ON THE CARDINGTON BRIDGE CLOSURE, CONSTRUCTION OF A BY-PASS AND RESISTANCE OF THE COMMUNITY AND ROAD USERS TO ABANDON THE USE OF ILLEGAL BY PASS.

The Northern Cape experienced severe flooding between April and May 2026 that devastated communities across the Province, including the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.

In the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, the Cardington Village was among those hardest hit - the bridge on that road was washed away, and the department responded by communicating alternative routes to affected road users.

We understand what this road means to commuters. It connects the Northern Cape to neighbouring provinces and countries. We also understand the burden that comes with the rising fuel costs due to longer detours. But hardship does not justify illegal conduct and what is happening at Cardington right now is illegal conduct.

An illegal bypass has been erected. Money is allegedly being exchanged for passage.

This is unacceptable.

Commuters run the risk of forfeitting insurance coverage and other legal claims such the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

Last week I met with the Cardington community. We reached an agreement that the community would stand down from the illegal bypass and give the department space to construct a legal one. I introduced the contractor who will do the work. I reported that plans are in place to rebuild the destroyed bridge.

This morning I was informed that community members removed the cordoned area and chased away that same contractor we introduced last week. I want to be clear, this cannot continue.

To the community of Cardington, I call on you to honour the agreement we made. Allow the department to do its work. The contractor must be permitted back on site without interference or intimidation.

To all road users: do not use the illegal bypass. Use the designated alternative route via Ditshipeng, Bothitong, Dithakong through Heiso to the N14. We are working to restore your road. Allow us to do so.

I thank you.

🚧 Z. F MGCAWU DISTRICT: - RESTORING ROADS, REBUILDING COMMUNITIES IN EKSTEENSKUIL 🚧

Significant progress is being made on the repair of a section of Minor Road MR857 near Eksteenskuil in the Z. F Mgcawu District, which was washed away by severe flooding recently.

The Department of Roads and Public Works is working diligently to restore this vital transport link, ensuring safer and more reliable access for residents, commuters and local economic activities.

This project reflects the Department's commitment to maintaining road infrastructure, improving connectivity and building resilient communities across the Northern Cape Province.

Together, we are restoring access and keeping the province moving forward.

πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈMEC FUFE MAKATONG VISITS PHAKAMILE MABIJA APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME IN KIMBERLEY

The MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong, visited the Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme in Kimberley as part of the Department’s commitment to strengthening artisan development, youth empowerment and skills transfer in the Northern Cape.

πŸ‘₯ The visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with learners, assess training progress and witness first-hand the impact of government investment in developing critical technical and artisan skills.

🏭 The visit commenced at the Artisan Training Institute (ATI), where 20 learners are currently receiving training in:
* Boilermaking
* Fitting and Turning
* Welding

πŸ“š Learners are receiving both theoretical and practical training to prepare them for artisan certification and future employment opportunities.

❄️ The MEC then proceeded to the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Academy (ACRA), where 10 young people are undergoing specialised training in Refrigeration and Maintenance.

πŸŽ“ Both training initiatives form part of the Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme and are fully funded and supported by the Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works.

πŸ“… The programme commenced on 8 April 2026 and enrolled 30 learners following a competitive selection process from 142 applications received.

πŸ› οΈ Through a structured three-year apprenticeship model, learners receive accredited theoretical instruction and workplace-based practical experience. Upon successful completion, participants will obtain a National Trade Certificate (Red Seal Qualification), recognised nationally and internationally.

πŸ’¬ Speaking during the visit, MEC Makatong reaffirmed government's commitment to investing in young people and building a skilled workforce for the future.

🌟 She highlighted that initiatives such as the Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme create meaningful opportunities for young people through skills development and artisan training. By investing in technical skills today, the Department is laying the foundation for sustainable infrastructure delivery, economic growth and long-term employment opportunities in the Northern Cape.
