Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Invites Communities to Participate in Library Book Selection Process

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is pleased to announce the commencement of a library book selection exercise aimed at strengthening and enriching library collections across the province.

This initiative forms part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to promoting a culture of reading, lifelong learning, and equitable access to information. Importantly, the process will be consultative-driven, ensuring that library users and stakeholders have a meaningful opportunity to influence the types of books and resources that are made available in their local libraries.

Recognising that libraries serve diverse communities with varying interests, educational needs, languages, and cultural backgrounds, the Department believes that community participation is essential in building relevant and responsive library collections. Through this consultative process, residents will be invited to share their preferences and recommendations regarding reading materials that reflect their interests and aspirations.

The book selection exercise will provide an opportunity for library patrons, educators, learners, authors, community organisations, and other stakeholders to contribute towards the development of library collections that support literacy, education, recreation, skills development, and cultural preservation.

Speaking on the initiative, the Department emphasised that community involvement remains at the heart of public library services.
“Our libraries belong to the people they serve. By involving communities in the book selection process, we are ensuring that our collections remain relevant, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse voices, experiences, and information needs of the people of the Northern Cape.”

The Department encourages all community members to participate actively in the consultation process and help shape the future of library services throughout the province.

Together, we can build library collections that inspire learning, encourage reading, and preserve the rich heritage and stories of our communities.

🇿🇦 Youth Day 2026 | Victoria West

Today, we commemorated Youth Day by honouring the courage, resilience, and determination of the young people who shaped our nation’s history and continue to inspire future generations.

The people of Victoria West came together to celebrate the energy, talent, and potential of our youth. The event served as a reminder of the important role young people play in building stronger communities and a brighter future for all.

As we reflected on the sacrifices of the youth of 1976, we also renewed our commitment to supporting education, opportunity, and empowerment for the next generation.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this Youth Day commemoration meaningful and memorable.

Today, the Government Services Fair formed part of the Youth Day Commemoration in Victoria West, bringing government services closer to the community while honouring the legacy of the youth of 1976.

Residents had the opportunity to access a range of essential government services, engage directly with officials, and learn more about programmes aimed at empowering young people and strengthening communities.

As we commemorate 50 years since the historic 1976 Youth Uprising, we remain committed to creating opportunities, expanding access to services, and building a brighter future for the next generation.
